“Oh, honey, you don’t have to thank me. That’s what good parents do, and you know that we’re your parents now.”
“I know, but I’m still grateful to have you in my life,” I tell her.
“We’re lucky that Chase found you,” she says, then we share quick goodbyes.
I hand Chase back his phone and pull mine out of my pocket, calling Nana next.
“You passed, didn’t you?” she answers.
“I did. I’m a lawyer, Nana.”
“I’m so proud of you, honey. You deserve all the good things that have happened to you more than anyone I know.”
More tears prickle at my eyes, and I try to blink them away. “I couldn’t have done it without you,” I murmur.
“You could have, but I’m glad you didn’t have to,” she replies.
“Are you still coming to Chase’s game on Sunday?” I check.
“Of course I am. You two have turned me into a football fan, which is weird.”
I laugh. “Tell me about it. I never thought I would be a football fan, let alone dating a football player,” I tell her.
“How about being engaged to one?” Chase asks, pulling a ring out of his pocket.
“Oh my God.” I gasp.
“What’s wrong?” Nana asks, sounding worried.
“Chase just proposed to me,” I whisper, my voice catching at the end.
“Say yes and call me back later,” she tells me, and the line goes dead.
“So what do you say?” he asks. “Will you marry me?”
I nod, finally letting the tears fall before launching myself into his arms. He holds me for a moment before pulling back to slide the ring onto my finger. “Now we have two things to celebrate.”
I blurt out a laugh. “Take me to bed, fiancé.”
He growls, grabs my hand, and tugs me to our room. My short legs can barely keep up, and I laugh the entire way.
If this is how the rest of our lives is going to be, I’m so game.
