Grace was speechless. Until, leaning forward with a quick grin, he kissed her on the lips. Which seemed to break the spell.

“More than anything!” she said fervently. Smiling with new excitement, she listened to the beats of her own heart, and almost didn’t tell him, because it might interfere with what she wanted, what he wanted. He might put his foot down, and then they would quarrel.

But they had promised honesty, and she would not, could not, break that now.

She took his hand and held it in her lap while she drew in her breath. “I have something to tell you, too. It is early days yet, but I think I might be expecting our first child.”

The flash of awe and happiness suffusing his face was unmistakable. “Oh, my dear…” He wrapped her gently in his arms, kissing her hair, her forehead, her mouth. “Aren’t you clever?”

“I think you might have had something to do with it, too. And it was not so much cleverness as—”

“I know exactly what it was, minx, and I have a sudden desire to do a lot more of it. As long as you are well,” he added hastily. “You must always send me away if you feel any—”

“Oliver. We have already promised honesty, and I feel very well indeed! A little strange, perhaps, as though I am someone else, but that is novelty. And I could still be wrong, because this is my first time, but I believe we should have a child in May.”

He kissed her again. “Then to the devil with Constantinople! This is much more exciting!”

She touched her forehead to his. “It is. But we need not go down that road again of one or the other. I would love to travel with you. If I have difficulties, well, they have doctors and midwives abroad, too.”

“Travel is tiring,” he said doubtfully.

“Travel is interesting. And we have months! May we not set +off and see how we are?”

He pulled her face up to his, searching her eyes, and slowly, the anxiety in his face gave way to a smile, to the excitement she had longed to see there.

“I don’t want to be apart from you,” she whispered. “We will take care, and we will have fun. Together.”

“Together,” he repeated, almost like a vow, and kissed her.
