Luckily, once she opened her mouth and let out her shiny new sonic scream, everyone had shut their eyes, fell to the ground, and covered their ears.

Axel, Jax, and Zane had walked around the town after asking people what happened, and there was no mention of dragons. But there was a lot of confusion as to what the hell that sound was.

Apparently, Axel started telling people that it was aliens. Aleida wasn’t sure which was worse, dragons or aliens.

Although in the case of her brothers, the dragons were worse.

“What’s that for?” Draven asked when he saw the ax in Jax’s hands.

Jax didn’t answer, but his eyes said it all when he glanced at the tail that was sticking out of the truck.

“Put it back,” Draven said, walking over to his brother’s dead body. He picked up the heavy tail and managed to tuck it in the cargo bed where it couldn’t be seen. “I think he’s suffered enough for today.”

Axel, Jax, and Zane watched as Draven walked over. “Do you want to come with us?” he asked.

Aleida shook her head. She didn’t. She had seen enough of her evil half-brother for ten lifetimes.

“I’ll stay here with Gunner and get ready to leave,” she said.

“Okay,” Draven said with an understanding nod. He turned to Gunner as the boys walked over. “That was pretty incredible, Gunner. He probably would have won if you weren’t with us.”

“Nah,” Axel said, flexing his arm. “I was just about to pull out the big guns to let him have it.”

“He would have had it all right,” Jax said with a roll of his eyes. “He would have had it for lunch.”

Draven just ignored them. “You’re as much an official member of the Colwood Firehouse as any of us as far as I’m concerned.”

Gunner’s face lit up. “Really?” he asked, looking around at the guys who were all nodding. “The probation is over?”

“It’s over,” Draven said reaching his hand out. “You passed.”

“Thank you!” Gunner quickly swallowed his hand and shook it up and down a little too enthusiastically.

“And just to make it official,” Axel said, reaching into his pocket as he walked up to the newest firefighter. “I made you a little something.”

“Oh, my God,” Jax said, rolling his eyes as Axel pulled out a homemade medal. It was made from ribbon with the top of a tin can as the medallion. It had ‘Newest Fireman’ written on it in a Sharpie.

Gunner was grinning happily as Axel put it around his neck.

“I’ll cherish it forever,” Gunner said with a laugh.

“Be sure that you do,” Axel said, smirking at him. “It’s priceless.”

“You guys are all priceless,” Draven said, waving them away. “Now get in the truck.”

Zane, Jax, and Axel climbed into the pickup truck as Draven hung back. “We’ll leave as soon as we get back, okay?”

Aleida nodded. She was ready. It was going to be a long flight back, first flying to the East Coast over the United States, and then flying over the ocean to Europe with a lion on her back.

But it didn’t seem as daunting as it did when she first left Europe to fly here. She felt different. Like she could fly to Mars and back without breaking a sweat.

Aleida was a mated dragon now and she had never felt so powerful. It wasn’t just a high-pitched scream that came out of her throat. There were also powerful sound waves and concussive forces and a whole bunch of other things that she still didn’t fully understand, but was excited to learn. Even now, just standing here, she could feel the power flowing through her veins. She was stronger, faster, tougher. She felt like a frigging superhero and wasn’t so scared of her brothers anymore.

“Are you okay?” Gunner asked as the guys drove away with Jarin’s dragon in the back.

She opened her hands and squeezed them into fists, feeling like she could punch through brick walls. “I’m better than okay,” she said with a grin. “I’m ready to go see my brothers.”

  Epilogue

  Aleida

“How long is it going to take us to fly over this thing?” Gunner asked, swallowing hard as he looked out at the horizon. The Atlantic Ocean went on as far as the eye could see.

“Probably about four days,” Aleida answered. She grinned as she turned to Draven. “Maybe five if he can’t keep up.”

“Oh, I’ll keep up,” Draven said, rolling his shoulders. “I’ll be so far ahead of you that you’ll be staring at my dragon’s ass the entire flight.”

“That doesn’t sound too appealing,” Gunner said with a laugh. “I guess there’s no movies or service on this flight?”

“You guess right,” Aleida said with a grin. They had spent the past few days traveling over the country and had finally landed on the East Coast. This was going to be the hardest part of their journey. Flying for four days and nights straight with no breaks. No food. No rest. No nothing.

Aleida was more worried about Draven and Gunner than herself. She felt so powerful now that she didn’t think she would ever need to rest again. It felt like she could fly around the planet without needing a break.

“Let’s do it,” Gunner said, psyching himself up as he looked out at the ocean.

  “Ready?” she asked Draven.

He just grinned and began to shake as he phased into his dragon.

“He’s ready,” Gunner said as the huge red dragon jumped in the sky and flapped its wings as it flew over the ocean.

“How about you?” she asked, smiling at her mate.

“I’m ready to follow you wherever you go,” he said, smiling back at her.

  God, I love him.

“Let’s go kick some dragon ass,” Gunner said, “and when it’s all done, I’ll stuff you full of little lion babies.”

Aleida laughed as her cheeks warmed. “Sounds like a plan.”

“Then let’s get going,” he said as he looked at Draven who was already looking small as he approached the horizon. “We can’t let him win.”

“Oh, he won’t,” she said, laughing as she let her dragon come. “I’m a mated dragon, thanks to you.”

He was smiling as Aleida’s dragon burst from her body. She lowered her wing and let him climb onto her back. When she felt his thighs squeezing her sides she pushed off the ground and flapped her wings, taking off over the ocean.

Gunner leaned forward and stroked her dragon’s head. “I love you, my sexy dragon,” he whispered in a low gravelly voice.

If her dragon could smile she would have. Instead, she raised her head and let out a high-pitched chirp as she followed Draven, flying off into the horizon.

  Happier than ever.

What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas. Especially when you wake up with a naked man in your bed and a ring on your finger.

Some people just can't handle Vegas.

My friend warned me that Vegas can turn the most straight-laced girl into a party-crazed slut.

  I didn't believe her.

I've always been the straightest of the straight.

  Boy, was I wrong.

  I hate being wrong.
