The call rang off, and as he stared down at the blank screen, Danny’s heart felt heavy. What was done was done, they couldn’t turn back time, they couldn’t erase the anger that had passed between them, and even if he wanted to, he wasn’t so sure that they could ever go back to their old footing; too much hurt and damage had been caused.

Before Moray had the chance to call again, Danny switched the phone off. He couldn’t speak to him, not today of all days.

Beside him, Stacey nodded down to the phone. ‘There’s always tomorrow,’ she said gently, ‘and it’s not as though he doesn’t know where to find you, or vice versa,’ she said with a raise of her eyebrows.

Danny frowned and, as he opened his mouth to answer, Stacey brought her finger up to his lips, silencing him.

‘You miss him,’ she said, ‘I can see it in your eyes. The least you can do is hear him out, let him explain why he felt the need to protect Aaron.’ She nodded towards Logan. ‘You never know, you might even be able to see where he was coming from.’

Shaking his head, Danny gave a gentle smile. He had to admit there was a hint of truth to her words. Ever since leaving the flat Moray owned, Danny had tried to put himself in Moray’s position. If the roles had been reversed, he knew he would have done the same, he would have died for Logan, so what made Moray any different? Slipping his phone into his pocket, he sighed. He would see what tomorrow brought, and if there was anything to salvage between him and Moray, then so be it; at the very least it would be a start, something they could work on. There and then, he pulled Stacey even closer. He hadn’t been lying when he’d told Maxine that Stacey was a diamond, because in his eyes, she was, and he was thankful every day that he had her in his life.
