This got their attention.
Asher pinned her beneath a look of utmost condescension, like she was a small, inferior child getting in the way. Eden squared her shoulders and tipped her chin. She much preferred Francesca’s hostility over his arrogant disdain, even if he was tending to Cleo.
“That isn’t just a soldier,” Asher said. “That’s Brahm’s five-star general.”
Eden thought of the device back at Dr. Norton’s. The fifth blinking dot on the map. The one that behaved differently than the other four. The one that never made sense, because why was there a fifth? Now, Eden knew. Here was the fifth blinking dot. Somehow, the resistance got him. Somehow, they were holding him prisoner. “What are you going to do with him?”
“Eventually, the same thing we plan to do with all of them.” With an impassioned gleam sparkling in her good eye, Francesca curled her hand into a fist and brought it down on the table. “If Brahm is the snake, Electus is his head. We are going to cut it off.”
Eden’s blood went cold.
“After we rescue Pru and the others.”
The others.
Cassian.
Yes.
She had to rescue him.
It was the only certain thing in a world that had gone topsy-turvy.
But how?
The resistance was mortally wounded. And unbeknownst to the resistance, she was part of the snake’s head. How quickly would they try to destroy her once they found out?
They certainly wouldn’t help her. Which meant she had to keep all of it under wraps and she had to convince Francesca to include Cassian in their rescue plans.
Right now, this was all that mattered.
This was her northern star.
Whatever it would take, for however long it would take, she would break Cassian free.
