“Yeah, I think so,” I said.

“Just put the ground back when you’re done,” the groundskeeper said. “And leave the shovel. As far as I’m concerned, you were never here.”

“Thanks,” I said, turning my back to the man. I hesitated and turned around again. “She say anything else?”

“Just that you’ve been through a lot and could use a hand,” the groundskeeper said with a shrug. “I don’t get many visitors in my dreams, but when I do, I make it a rule to follow what they tell me to do. Bad luck otherwise.”

“Right, bad luck,” I said, leaving the shed.

I made my way back to Amber’s plot of ground and started. Anyone who’s had to dig a hole using a shovel knows it’s not an easy job. Even with my enhanced strength, it was a chore.

Despite the coolness of the night air, I started to sweat. Drops of perspiration fell from my forehead. I dug the blade of the shovel in, over and over again. With each shove of the tool, I thought about what I would do if I found her body. I thought about what I would do if there was in fact no body.

Time passed and I lost myself in the rhythm of the scoop of the shovel, emptying the spade and then doing it over and over again.

I wasn’t sure how much time passed, but a few meters down, I felt the shovel hit something hard. My hands burned, but my healing factor would deal with that in no time flat.

I cleared off the lid of the coffin. The lid was thick and in two parts. From the middle up, it opened and the bottom portion did the same. The coffin itself was grey. Again, nothing adorned the lid, no name or even a symbol.

I cleaned off the sand and dirt around it to be able to open the upper half of the coffin.

“You ready for this?” I asked X, tossing the shovel to the side. I stood on top of the lower half of the coffin, looking down at the upper section.

  “Are you?” X asked.

“As ready as I’m ever going to be,” I said.

I grabbed the edge of the top of the coffin and forced it up. A wall of dirt and sand fell into the open coffin as I lifted the lid. I leaned back, looking inside.

I didn’t have a lot of light to work with. The dual moons overhead and the stars shone down. There were a few lights in the cemetery, but deep into the ground, they weren’t of much use.

I looked into the darkness of the coffin.

  It wasn’t empty.

Not a body, but a piece of clothing I recognized rested in the casket, a black mask with a modified red cross on it. There was a horizontal line like the traditional symbol and smaller horizontal line below it.

I’d seen the emblem before. It belonged to the Order.
