“Have another donut,” Ms. Boscobel offered.
As for Marcus and Marius, by the time the morning had ended both had almost forgotten the way it had begun. Marcus had green paint all over his shirt from a picture he had done at the class easel. Marius smelled of apple juice, because he had spilled some on himself during snack time.
“We’ll go home and you’ll both change,” said Mrs. Cott when she saw the state of her twins.
“We already changed once today,” said Marius. His mother thought he was referring to changing out of his pajamas when he woke up, so she didn’t ask for an explanation. Besides, school was over for the day, and they all had other things to think about now.
“Can we stop and buy some donuts?” Marius asked his mother as they walked past a donut shop.
“Donuts aren’t red,” commented Mrs. Cott. She didn’t add that they didn’t contain any vitamins or nutrients either.
“I know,” said Marius. “But I feel like eating something a different color today.”
“Great,” said his mother. “I’ll fix some green beans to go with a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch. And if you eat it all, then we’ll take a walk later and buy a donut for each of you. How does that sound?”
“It sounds delicious,” shouted Marius. “Delicious.”
“I wonder if Mrs. Greenbean eats green beans for her lunch?” commented Marcus.
“Greenstein. Her name is Greenstein,” said Marius, correcting his brother. “And I bet she eats donuts.”
