The Bastard Son of Thor, page 11
"Depends. The safe is upstairs in the master suite."
The double doors leading into the east wing are open and the path of light illuminates the hallway. All the doors are closed and I assumed locked. At the end, I stop in front of the heavy doors with the bear image on them and take a deep breath, then I push the handles down and the sound of the click sends goosebumps down my spine. I shove the doors open and they swing wide. I walk in and straight through the foyer without stopping. I place my hand on the door handle and turn to smile at my gun.
"The heroin is in here." I turn the doorknob, but it doesn’t move. It’s locked. Fuck! My heart leaps inside my throat. Is Aurei not ready? Am I not supposed to be here?
I smile at my armed escort. "Oh, I forgot, I’m nervous. I need my phone to quick scan the lock." He hands it over to me without hesitation and out of habit, I say, "thanks." Then turn my back on him. Pretending to search my apps for it, Aurei’s smiling face appears. He mouths to me. "Good girl." Then a text appears.
*Walk quickly with purpose to the bed with the heavy headboard then lay down flat on the floor behind it. *
The lock clicks. I drop my phone in the red hoodie pouch, then turn the handle and open it, pushing the door wide. "There we go," I say as I enter without looking back. With long, purposeful strides, I move quickly as instructed to the bed. The sound of his boots follows me in.
"Crucial!" The dude says. "Really rad!"
Feeling safe and high from my own adrenaline rush, I can’t help showing off this magnificent room. I open my arms wide and spin around. "Fucking awesome, isn’t it?"
He stands gawking and taking everything in. "It’s dope!"
Then the lights flicker and a song cues up. The opening music and single guitar strum are loud. Panic strikes us both. The lights go off , the music dies, and we are in silent darkness. Every fiber of my being is listening and realizing I’m out of position. The next sound makes the hair on my head stand straight up. It’s the sound of the door shutting and the lock setting. It echoes across the room. The light over the bed flickers and I know it’s time for me to hide! In the darkness, I sprint the short distance to it.
Darkness descends. Blankness!
I pull up sharp before I ram it. Reach out and feel it. I hide behind the headboard and look back.
Needing to know what’s happening.
The spotlight pops on, then off.
The dude is pointing my gun at the door.
The music blasts us. It’s deafening!
Alice Cooper’s "Welcome To My Nightmare!"
The spotlight illuminates the door.
The sight scares the shit out of even me.
The Bastard Son of Thor!
Maximus Aurelius Moore!
Butt ass naked!
With a big ass knife in his hand.
But the scary shit?
Is his face.
The intensity of his eyes!
His evil, sick, menacing grin!
That is the face of a killer!
The blood drains from my face.
My hands tingle.
The lights go off.
The music cranks up!
It’s deafening.
Fire erupts!
A gunshot!
I drop to my knees, sprawl on the floor and pray to the only God I know. "Sweet Zeus! Father of the Gods! Protect The Bastard Son."
Aurei:
The fucking motherfucker!
My blood runs cold, listening to him talk to Siri. It’s all I can do to wait for her to get here. Standing in the media room with Brutus, I pace.
He tells me. "Calm down. It isn’t anyone’s fault, but the bastard who has her."
"You and I both know I shouldn’t have let her go alone." I snap at him.
He snaps back. "Don’t you dare ever say that again." He bows up and takes a step at me. I stare him down, unafraid, daring him to challenge me. His body is trembling, and his voice, full of emotion, tears into me. "You don’t know what I know about her. She has lived the last two and half years in almost complete isolation from her family and friends. When Piper left her, she was all alone. Bart found her and thank God he did because his platform allowed her to become the diva she is. But she is a workaholic and although in the beginning, she tried to have somewhat of a normal life, she gave up and threw herself into her work. Going home to Alabama was the best thing that could have happened to her. It showed her; she needs a life apart from dancing. She bought that car to be independent. Don’t you dare make her feel guilty or weak because this happened. If you do, she’ll lose a part of her confidence that she will never get back!"
I stand there stunned by the speech and hang my head. "You’re right. I know you are, but it’s damn hard knowing she is in danger."
"I’ve trained her to take care of herself and she’s handling it. She’s going to be fine. Get ready. They are pulling up to the gate."
I see her car sitting in the entrance and watch her gorgeous face appear as the window goes down. She is so stunningly beautiful to me. My heart throbs so hard in my chest it hurts. If anything happens to her....
Brutus mans the mic and tells Alfred what to say. We can’t risk her knowing that he is here too. She needs to be as unaware as the motherfucker is. Watching her handle him, I know without a doubt that Brutus is right. When this nightmare is over, we have to be careful not to blame her, and not to blame each other. She is being strong and holding a level of confidence that is vital if she is to be independent after this. She’s truly a remarkable woman.
They enter the east wing, and I turn to Brutus. I stick my hand out and tell him. "If anything happens to me, promise me, you will keep her safe."
He grasps mine and pumps it. "I promise. Now go make him rue the day, he kidnapped our bae."
I smile at that, give him a head nod and right before I walk out, I tell him, “Hooah!”
I shut the door and circle around behind Siri. I’m standing outside the foyer when she tries the locked door. I’m prepared to charge in, but I don’t want to risk him shooting her. I hold the phone up to my ear.
Come on, Smart Thang. Play this part right.
She says, "Oh, I forgot, I’m nervous. I need my phone to quick scan the lock.... Thanks."
Atta girl! I grin and Stella connects us. I smile at my Brave Thang and silently tell her. "Good girl."
Relief fills her eyes and makes my heart harden even harder than it already is. Stella sends the silent text to her phone. I watch her read it, take a deep breath, square her shoulders and wait for the door to unlock. When it does, she turns the handle and boldly walks through. The motherfucker follows her blindly in, and I ease into the foyer behind them. Quickly, I strip down naked, take my knife in my hand then sneak in behind them unnoticed. With my back against the wall, I stand quietly, watching her cross the room. My foot is wedged in the doorway, waiting until she is out of danger to lock us in. Trapping him.
She opens her arms and twirls.
My heart stops beating.
If she sees me, she’ll give me away.
"Fucking awesome, isn’t it?" She tells him.
He stops and looks around. "It’s dope!"
Brutus kills the lights.
Darkness. Good.
A calmness settles over me.
The lights flicker at the bed.
He hits the song.
Perfect!
The lights go off.
Concealment.
Silence.
I pull my foot out and the door shuts then locks.
CLICK!
The light over the bed flickers.
Run like the wind, Wild Thang!
The lights flicker again at the bed.
I watch her disappear behind the safety of the 12" solid hickory wood and know she is protected from a bullet.
The spotlight pops my target.
The gun is aimed at me.
Alice Cooper’s demons enter the playroom.
Let the mind-game begin.
The spotlight shows him
his worse nightmare.
Meet The Bastard Son of Thor
I grins at the sickness.
I will have my revenge.
The lights go off.
The music takes us to hell.
You are mine, motherfucker!
I lunge, drop, and roll.
BANG!
He shoots the door.
One.
I bitch slap him as I run by.
He spins.
BANG!
Two.
I slice his arm.
He screams.
BANG!
Numero tre!
I stab his leg.
He howls.
BANG! BANG!
Glass shatters on the wall.
That’s four and five.
The spotlight strobes.
I stand and confront him.
Eyeball to eyeball.
Bastard to bastard.
The music ends.
I laugh.
He screams.
Echoes roam.
Illumination.
The gun touches my chest.
Fear turns to wickedness in his eyes.
Death smiles back.
Venom in my voice.
"Do it, Motherfucker!"
He pulls the trigger.
Chapter Twenty
Siri:
My heart is racing so fast, I’m panting trying not to panic. I know I heard gunshots. Behind my eyelids, all I can see is Aurei standing at the door, fucking fearless, without any protection. His naked chest just asking for it. "Heaven help me!" I feel the nightmare inside and I want to scream, but I can’t. I have to listen.
The lights come on and I peer out from behind the headboard. I see Aurei standing in front of the addict with a look on his face that makes my breath vanish and my chest squeeze my heart so fucking hard; it’s painful. His face is so fucking fierce. He’s so fucking angry. Not wanting to watch him kill, but not able to pull my eyes away, I watch glued to the horrific scene. The cold from the floor seeping into my soul. My whole body begins to shake.
The song ends and there is silence, then bloodcurdling scream after scream fills my head. Goosebumps, the size of eggs, break out. Every cell in my body stands at attention!
Blood begins to pool on the floor, dripping off the arm and down the leg of my assailant!
You fucked with the wrong man.
Then my gun is touching Aurei’s chest.
My head begins to spin.
Time stands still.
The world falls away.
There is only Aurei.
There will only ever be....
The addict’s grin is pure evil.
I hear Aurei’s raised voice, so hard with hate, I almost don’t recognize it. "Do it, Motherfucker!"
I jump to my feet and take a step.
His forearm bulges. His hand squeezes the gun....
AUREI!
Aurei:
Movement catches my eye. My head snaps to the bed. Siri takes a step from behind the protection of the headboard. A look of utter terror is on her face. Her eyes as big as saucers. She looks wild! Wildly afraid.
The hammer clicks.
I look down at the gun, then back into his eyes. "It only carries five," I tell him and laugh as he pisses himself.
THUD!
Siri! I turn to see my Wild Thang crumpled. Her blonde hair spilling onto the floor.
My soul freezes, then from my chest a sound so terrible erupts, it makes the motherfucker drop to his knees and beg for his life.
I grip his head and squeeze it so hard, he shrieks, then I slam his face into my knee. Hell bent on permanently disfiguring him. Not caring if I kill him. Instantly, he drops like dead weight. I sling him away from me.
Rushing to Siri, I try to maintain calm. She could need me. She could be shot. First aid techniques race through my mind.
A vision of Bradford then Easy.
Stay focused.
Check for a heartbeat first.
Check for blood second.
Check for broken bones.
Check for....
She’s lying face down. Limp and lifeless!
"Siri. Siri. Siri." I repeat her name as I check for her heartbeat. Placing two fingers against the jugular I have kissed and mauled, while I thrust the force of life into her. The world falls away around me as I press. The only thing that will ever matter again is the sensation against my skin in this one moment. I stop breathing. The steel bands hover outside my heart, waiting to know if they will seal themselves forever around it or not.
....
....
....
Boom boom. Boom boom.
Relief floods my body, and I nearly lose it. She’s alive. But....
I quickly check her for blood and broken bones. Running my hands over her body. First her back, then gently rolling her over and examining her front. She’s clean!
I hear my breath return to my lungs with an enormous sigh.
Shock. She’s in shock.
I taste my salty tears.
Softly and tenderly, I cradle her to my chest, holding her tight, and rocking her. "Wake up, Baby Thang. It’s all over." Then I’m kissing that beautiful vein and whispering into her ear. "I got 'cha. I got 'cha!"
I feel a heavy hand on my shoulder, and I look up to see the brokenhearted face of Brutus kneeling beside me. I smile at him. "She’s fainted."
"Sweet Jesus!" He bellows, then sits back on his heels. He covers his face with both hands. After a few moments, he says, "I nearly lost my cookies." Then he pats me on the shoulder, drops my robe and stands. "The police are here. I’ll go meet them."
I brush the hair out of her face. She’s so pale. I cover her parted lips with mine and blow my breath into her mouth. Her eyes flutter, then focus on me. She sucks hard, and I give her my tongue, thrusting into her. She wraps her arms around me and holds me there. Needing me as much as I need her.
When she lets me go, I kiss her lips, her nose, her eyes, then hug her tight one more time. "I have to put my robe on now," I tell her. "I’m naked."
"I noticed." She giggles and it’s the sweetest sound I have ever heard.
I pull her to her feet, and she helps me into my robe, then slides under my arm, wraps her arms around me and clings to me. We walk out from behind the headboard to see Antonio, Angelo, and Quintus standing by the pool of bad blood. Her gun and my knife lay at their feet. The kidnapper is handcuffed and being escorted out by the police. Brutus stands to the side with a couple more police officers and is giving them an accounting. He points to the camera’s hidden behind the special glass, and I know he is telling them that we recorded the entire episode. The only part not captured was the elevator ride.
Siri appears to be fine, but I can feel the slight tremble in her when she leans against me. Each of my cousins offer her an Italian hug, and she gives it to them, but it’s more a face offering than a body hug. She keeps one hand on me. Then we walk her over to the police where Brutus is. When he turns around and sees her, he opens his arms, and she runs to him. He holds her close, and she weeps and weeps. He pats her head, tells her. "You did great, little one. You survived." He gives me a look that says, 'she is more fragile than you think.' Then she pushes away, laughs at her own crying, and slides back under my arm, hugging me tight, then asking for a peck on her perfect lips. I gladly give it to her, then hold her tight against my body while the police question her. She answers with concise, clear answers and in 15 minutes, we are finished. They tell us if they need anything else, they will call.
When we turn around, my crew has cleaned the bloodstain and the police have taken the other items as evidence. We walk out with all of them in silence. At the door, I shake each of their hands and thank them for their help and Siri gives them each a real hug.
When I close the door and we are alone, I ask. "Do you want to sleep, or eat?"
She thinks a second then says. "I want a shower."
I hold my hand out to her and she slips hers in. I slide my fingers between hers and cinch them tight. "My turn to bathe you."
Walking up the stairs, she starts to talk. She tells me what happened. When she is finished, she is undressed and I pull her under the hot water. She lays her head on my chest and as I bathe her, I begin to tell her everything that I was doing, and everything I was thinking while we were apart. How I missed her as soon as she drove away, and how I knew something wasn’t right. How what happened wasn’t her fault and how she couldn’t let this keep her from being independent.
"That isn’t me talking. That’s Brutus. But he is right. You didn’t do anything wrong. You were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. But because you are who you are, a bad guy is off the streets and you are safe. That’s all that matters, Wild Thang. That’s all that matters."
I turn her face up to mine, cup her chin, stroke her soft lips with my thumb and when she closes her eyes, I kiss her. Slowly. Controlling my passion, knowing she needs to be loved and cherished right now, not hammered and pounded.
I turn the water off, take a towel and dry her, then myself. I pick her up, cradle her and carry her to the bed. I set her down and pull the sheets back. She climbs in, wiggles under them and gets comfy. Then reaches for me, and I slide in. She picks my arm up, wiggles close, snuggling skin on skin, and rests her head on my bicep, then throws an arm and leg over me. She drifts right off to sleep.
I lay there in the dark, my arm around her. One hand stroking her hair, the other stroking her arm as I listen to her even breathing.
If I had lost her.... If I had lost her.... I let the silent tears slip out. If she hadn’t fainted, I would have killed him.
I close my eyes and sleep.
The nightmare is over.
