River Race, page 3
Skyler, the leader from the Water Wizards, was not very nice to the Wave Riders team. How did Tyson, Nate, Selena, and Alicia respond to him? Would you have done or said anything differently?
WRITING PROMPTS
In Chapter 7, Tyson mentions the time the four of them were at an amusement park. Write a short scene that describes the story Tyson mentioned.
In Chapter 8, Selena and Nate convince Alicia and Tyson to take the Class II rapids pass. Write the scene again from Tyson’s point of view. How did he feel about Nate and Selena’s actions? What did he think of the Class II Rapids?
River Race takes place out in nature. Write about a time you’ve been out in nature. Where did you go? What did you do?
MORE ABOUT WHITE WATER RAFTING
White water rafting is a popular sport and activity in many parts of the United States. The activity is usually done on a river or other bodies of rough water. There are many types of rapids in the U.S. In this story, our characters paddled on two types—Class I and Class II.
In the International Scale of River Difficulty, rapids can go up to a Class VI. Water level also plays a big part in the class of a rapid, and there are different water classifications depending on the water’s level and flow.
Class I—fast moving water with small waves and some rough water over rocky or shallow parts
Class II—medium-sized waves with clear paths through rocks and ledges
Class III—rough rapids with large waves that can be difficult to avoid; a fast current is present
Class IV—an advanced level with powerful rapids; dangerous hazards may be present
Class V—long and possibly violent rapids make this an expert level class; unavoidable waves, steep drops, and complex routes
Class VI—extremely dangerous, unpredictable, and difficult rapids; often Class VI rapids have not been rafted on
