It was clear to see, however, that that wasn’t going to happen. No one was going to save me. I had to figure out what I wanted, and then I would have to save myself.

“Okay,” I said. “I’ll marry you.”

“You’ll what?” Ambrose asked, leaning towards me. He reached up to rub his temples.

Keaton smirked, his eyes sparkling dangerously. He said nothing, but he didn’t have to. Instead, he snapped his fingers. I assumed a cigarette would be dangling from his lips but there wasn’t. However, a man wearing a crimson robe with a wooden cross hanging from his neck and a thick, worn Bible clutched tightly to his chest appeared. He glanced around, and when his eyes settled on Keaton, they widened. He drew back, tightening his grip on the Bible even more.

His eyes rested on me and something flashed in them. I wouldn’t say it was because he recognized me. It wasn’t that. It was more like he understood what I was. His eyes dropped to my chest, as though he intended to clarify his thoughts for himself. They widened again when he saw something, though what that was, I couldn’t say.

“You’re a breather,” he said in a low, rushed voice.

Keaton cleared his throat, drawing the Father’s attention back to him.

“What am I -“ Father began, but Keaton cut him off.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Brother,” Ambrose said. He waved his hand and the Father disappeared. “You can’t bring in strangers with Breathers. The Prince will buy anyone, you know this.”

“Then who the fuck is going to marry us?” Keaton demanded to know.

“I am.” Ambrose smirked. “And I’ll do it right now.”
