The Milking Stool/Peggy Flaunders From Blakeborough, Wit, Character, Folklore and Customs of the North Riding of Yorkshire (London: Henry Frowde, 1898). Injury to beasts by witchcraft and the stealing of milk seems to have been a particular obsession in the past and this is just one tale of many.

The Hand of Glory All three Yorkshire versions of this story are given in Katherine Briggs, Folk Tales of Britain.

Cruel Peg Fyfe John Nicholson, Folklore of East Yorkshire (London: Simpkin, Marshal, Hamilton, Kent & Co., 1890). Peg was probably a real person, now claimed as an inhabitant by Market Weighton. She is also supposed to have been a witch – no surprises there! Her nasty career seems to have ended with her being hanged; according to one version she swallowed a spoon in order to cheat the noose but it didn’t work. Her latest incarnation is as a dark mild beer of the same name, brewed at the Goodmanham pub.

Regin the False-Hearted This story is part of a much longer tale. It has been told in different versions for at least 1,000 years. The best known is probably Wagner’s ‘Siegfried’, the third of his operas in The Ring of the Nibelungs cycle. The cursed ring is, of course, going to be the cause of Sigur’s death.
