AUTHOR’S NOTE

IN RESEARCHING MY NOVELS, I always learn things I never knew before—or had only superficially glimpsed—about the place I am from. Like its predecessors, Daughter of Ashes also has its roots embedded in memory and origins. For me, it has been a thrill to journey into the ancient past of Aquileia, to follow the dissolving cult of Isis and the dawn of Christianity, and trace mystic revelations, which have filled me with wonder.

I have used History to write a story. I’ve adapted it, transformed it, filled it with new suggestions and with my own imagination, and always treated it with love, all in an attempt to re-create some of that wonder through the medium of words.

I list below some of the works that served as a starting point in my research:

De Clara, L., Pelizzari, G., Vianello, A., Dalla salvezza di pochi alla salvezza universale. Breve guida ai mosaici della Basilica di Aquileia [From salvation for the few to universal salvation. A brief guide to the mosaics of the Basilica of Aquileia], Forum, Udine, 2016.

Fontana, F., I culti isiaci nell’Italia settentrionale. 1. Verona, Aquileia, Trieste [The cult of Isis in northern Italy. 1. Verona, Aquileia, Trieste], with a contribution by Emanuela Murgia, EUT, Trieste, 2010.

Giordani, C., Il cristianesimo egiziano di Aquileia [Egyptian Christianity in Aquileia], Gaspari editore, Udine, 2020.

Various authors, Circolo Culturale Navarca, edited by A. Bellavite, La Basilica di Aquileia. Tesori d’arte e simboli di luce in duemila anni di storia, di fede e di cultura [The Basilica of Aquileia. Artistic treasures and symbols of light in two thousand years of history, faith, and culture], Ediciclo editore, Portogruaro, 2017.
