Never one to linger over death or an open grave, he grabbed the shovel and began filling in the hole.
A little over an hour later he was through. He went back to the black horse again, removed the saddle and saddle bags and blanket roll. He tied the blanket roll on top of his own, then slapped the black horse on the rump and let her run.
He picked up the saddle and saddle bags, carried them over and placed them carefully on the grave.
Finally he stepped back, his hat in his hand, and looked at the grave. He nodded. “Well,” he said, then walked over to Charley, mounted, and rode west.
