They were both so taken up by the intimacy of the ceremony, neither of them heard a word of the service until the words “I pronounce you man and wife.”
Diego wasn’t even sure if he heard “You may now kiss your bride,” but he did so nonetheless—and Julia, of course, let him. For the guests, the kiss seemed to last forever, but Diego and Julia didn’t care. They simply wanted to savor this final precious moment for as long as they could.
When the two newlyweds finally came up for air, the guests went nuts. The Mariachi band struck up a traditional Mexican wedding song for the newly married couple. They made their exit as everyone stood and applauded. Yet, instead of leading Julia to the back of the room, Diego took her hand and snuck the two of them into the kitchen.
“What are you doing, Diego?” Julia laughed. “We’re supposed to get into a reception line to thank everyone for coming.”
“I know, I know!” answered Diego. “But I had to be alone with you for only one moment more.” He pushed her gently into the wall and leaned his body into hers, feeling the rising bump of his unborn child.
“I want you to know I’ll always love you, Julia. Siempre!”
“I’ll always love you, too, Diego!”
He then ravished her lips one more time.
When he finally raised his head and gazed into her eyes, he smiled at her wickedly. “Are you sure we have to get in the damnable line?”
“Yes, Señor Gonzales. We must!”
“Ah,” Diego sighed. “Always the Señora!” He then swatted her gently on her bottom as she pretended to slug him in the arm. Quickly, they made the appropriate adjustments to their clothes, opened the swinging doors between them and their guests, and strode arm in arm into their new life together as husband and wife.
