The Devil's Rebel, page 12
I wish I could call Harley and tell her about Danny...about my first time. I know her and Kyler have done it a few times. I never knew how amazing sex could be. My body aches but in a good way. I can still feel his kisses marking my body and when he came inside me it was like we were one body.
I can’t even describe the way he made me feel. It was out of this world. Most would probably say that what Danny and I are feeling is lust, but I have felt lust before when I messed around with my ex-boyfriend, and those feelings weren’t anywhere near as intense as the emotions Danny awakened inside me.
I have been waiting all morning for someone to let me out of this room.
Finally, the door opens and Romando is motioning me forward.
“You’re wanted downstairs. Follow me.”
I hope nothing has happened to Danny. What if someone saw us together and showed Marek video proof.
However, when I get downstairs my unease is put to rest, and I am lead to a breakfast nook off the kitchen where Danny, Harper, and the man I don’t know sits waiting for me.
When Danny sees me, he pops up from his seat and kisses me. “It’s over, Sara, I’m taking you home.”
“What?” I can’t believe my ears as I realize that Marek isn’t present.
“Sara, we haven’t officially met, but my name is Tiny Leone. I am sorry your stay here hasn’t been a pleasant one, but I can assure you, you will never have to worry about Marek again.”
“Um...how...why?”
“I killed him,” he tells me simply.
Harper smiles at me and I can’t help but smile back at her with relief.
“He’s dead. He’s really gone, and I can go home no strings attached?” I look around the room waiting for something to happen. Like Marek will pop out and start laughing but he doesn’t.
“After you have some breakfast I will let you call your parents and then my men will escort you to the airport.”
“Thank you.” I can’t believe this is real that I am really going home so easily.
Even though I am too excited to eat, I sit down with them and poke at some pancakes with my fork, taking small bites. I am so eager to get home, but I start wondering what will happen to Danny?
What will I tell my family?
“So, I was thinking. When I go home to my family. I will tell them that I was feeling out of place or overwhelmed. I will say I needed a few days to get away...that I lost my phone.”
“You don’t have to lie for me, Sara. Taking you was wrong. I never should have...”
“Oh,” Harper says in a weird voice.
“Are you alright?” Tiny questions as her face pales.
Her brows draw inward. “My water just broke.”
“We need to get her to a hospital!” Danny yells out.
We all jump up from the table except for Harper, who sits unmoving, staring at her bloody hand.
“I don’t feel so good,” she whispers as her body slumps forward.
Blood is pouring from her nose as Tiny shouts for his men.
Sayika tries to flee the kitchen.
Everything is happening so fast.
“Master Marek, he told me put poison in her food for last week. Supposed to induce labor so he could take baby and marry new wife but he not here. Baby come now, poison induced her.”
The woman doesn’t get another word out before Romando slices her throat.
The men lay Harper out on the tile floor. Danny has tears streaming down his cheeks as he kneels over his sister checking for a pulse.
“There is no time to go for help, Sara, we need to deliver this baby. Now.”
I drop to my knees next to him biting back tears of my own. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know anything about delivering babies. Blood is pooling between Harper’s legs and now it is coming from her ears.
“Danny, help me push on her stomach,” Tiny demands.
“Sara, you check for the baby’s head and be ready to pull it out.”
“I don’t know if I can.” I shake my head as I start to cry. I’m so scared. My hands are shaking.
Romando smacks me and as harsh as it is the stinging sensation snaps me out of shock. I lift up Harper’s dress and push her legs apart. Even though Harper seems to be lifeless her body is pushing this baby out.
“I see the head,” I announce. “Now what?”
Romando directs me on how to reach in and get ahold of the baby’s shoulder. It’s so disturbing but it isn’t the child’s fault his dad was a dick. By some miracle I am able to get the baby out and I cradle him in my arms wiping at his face with the dishtowel someone handed me.
“It’s a boy,” I tell them as he begins to wail in my arms. “Happy birthday, little one,” I coo at him, but I can’t stop crying as his dark eyes peer up at me. What a violent way to enter the world.
Romando cuts the chord and Danny gives me a blanket one of the men handed him.
“He’s beautiful,” I declare, as I wrap him up and hold him to my chest.
I glance over at Harper hoping she is okay too, but she isn’t moving, and I am not even sure she is breathing.
“Is she...is Harper...”
Danny shakes his head as he wraps an arm around me and his newborn nephew. “You did, great,” he tells me as he inspects his nephew. “All ten fingers and toes.” He offers me a forced smile. He must feel so devastated right now.
I wish there was something I could say to ease his loss, but there isn’t. Poor Harper, she appeared so genuinely happy only moments ago and now she’s simply gone. She will never hold her son. She will never know his warmth or his sweet little smile.
“What should we call him?”
“I don’t know,” Danny tells me and kisses the side of my head.
Tiny is caressing Harper’s hair with one hand while closing her eyes with his other. He whispers something in Spanish before kissing her on the lips.
We all sit quietly as the hard man says his goodbye.
“What’s that sound?” I ask, as the sound of motorcycles rumbling roars outside the house.
Chapter 28
Grim
Leone Compound
PULLING UP OUTSIDE the Leone compound, I want to bust through the damn gates. However, Porter is off his bike and approaching the entrance. When Tiny Leone opens the gate, he shakes his hand. I start for my gun when, Porter waves the rest of us forward. What the fuck? If this bastard is double crossing me after all I have done for him I will burn every fucking charter he has to the ground.
I park my bike and get off, followed by the rest of the men riding with us. I keep my hand close to my holster.
“Grim Jones, meet Tiny Leone, head of the Leone cartel and also the man who killed Marek. I thought you’d like to shake the hand of the man who killed the devil, eh?”
I grunt and put the safety on my gun.
“Where’s my daughter?” Nash barks.
“She’s safe. Why don’t you join me inside while your men stretch their legs? I know you have endured a long ride.”
We have been riding for days. I’m getting too damn old for this shit.
Romeo, Rebel, Nash, Porter and myself follow the dangerous man inside. I’m on edge but all his men have lowered their weapons.
“About my daughter,” Nash urges.
“In the kitchen. We need to talk,” Tiny insists.
“Not until I see my daughter—unharmed.”
Our group presses forward and in the kitchen is a gruesome site. I step over an Asian woman who has a slit throat. My eyes then go to my granddaughter who is sitting at the table holding a newborn baby. When I say newborn, I mean it still has all that nasty shit from being born on its legs that are poking out of the blanket he is swaddled in. Sara’s hands are covered in blood as well as the clothes she wears. Some man has his arm curled around her shoulder as she looks up at us all smiling.
Nash looks ready to spit nails.
“Easy, son.” Romeo grips his shoulder, keeping him from rushing them.
“As I said, your daughter is fine. How about a drink and that chat? We have a lot of business to discuss, no?”
At first, I think that Sara has somehow given birth to this child, but then I see that Devils Reject bitch sprawled out on the floor as one of Tiny’s men covers her body with a sheet.
“Dad, I can explain,” Sara calls out to him as he is still trying to process the scene before him.
“Someone better start talking,” he growls, staring at the man with a protective hold on his daughter.
“Please, let’s go to my billiard room where we can talk away from the stink of life and death,” Tiny presses. “Romando will see to the girl and the babe. Danny, you’ll be joining us.”
Sara looks to this Danny guy as though she is concerned for his safety. “I’ll be fine.” He kisses her temple and follows us out of the room.
We all take our seats anxious to get this shit over with.
“I guess we shall start with the most important topic on the table. The girl and the babe. You see, Marek and I have been partners for some time. My main holdings are in guns and drugs and well, Marek became greedy and sloppy. You see I’m not into the smuggling of women. I am no human trafficker. I take the women and find them jobs of their choosing. They are rewarded and paid well for their services. You can confirm this with Porter.” He pauses and Porter nods.
“We have been negotiating a deal for me to take Marek out for some time. To get more to the point though. You have turned down my invitation to do business several times. I see your moonshine venture as very profitable and well, I like money. Marek, took your daughter and brought her here hoping to get back in my good graces. He thought he was helping but alas he was not. Porter brought you here in case something went wrong and Marek by some chance took me out. Your daughter was about to be on her way home when Harper went into to labor, poisoned by her husband’s maid. And as for Danny here, he protected your Sara. Made sure no harm came to her and well, as the young folk do, they have formed an attachment.”
“What do you want?”
“All I ask is you let Sara keep the baby. Allow her and Danny to love the child as their own. For that great favor, I will clear it so that you can have your daughter, Karly is it? Back home in Drag Creek. You won't have to sneak phone calls no more. With Marek dead the Devils Rejects are now under Danny’s control, by my decree. I simply want to become a partner in your moonshine business, and the next time I extend an invitation of my friendship you will accept.”
I sigh and knock back my drink.
Fuck. I don’t want any part of the cartel.
“What else?”
“When you leave here, you will take Sara and the baby to the hospital, so she can make the birth official. The story will go as follows. Her and Danny are in love and ran off because she was afraid to tell her parents the truth of her pregnancy. She gave birth in a hotel. You will do this and in return for this I will clean up the mess Marek made and guide Danny in cleaning up the club. So that there can be peace between all of us and we can all get rich. We all like money, eh?”
I take a deep breath. All this talk of babies and deals reminds me of the past. So much blood has been spilled. So many lives lost for nothing. It’s time to do things a new way.
“Why do you care about the baby?”
“His mother was troubled and confided in me a lot. I cared about her as a close, personal friend. I have no room in my life for children. The girl has bonded to the child. I see no harm in letting her have him, because I know all about you, Jack ‘Grim’ Jones, and you are a man of your word, and you won’t let this child pay for the mistakes of the father. Just as you wouldn’t let your daughter pay for yours.”
“Deal,” I grunt ready to get the fuck out of here.
We have another long journey ahead and I have no idea how in the hell I will sell this to Karly. Nash already is gonna be hard enough. Motherfucker is gripping his glass so tight it’s a wonder it hasn’t shattered.
LATER AT THE HOSPITAL, I stare at my granddaughter as she dotes on a little boy who isn’t hers as the man who claims to love her looks at her the way I used to look at her grandmother and my chest aches as I see what Gypsy and I should have had. I see so much of Gypsy in Sara it scares me. I want to give her and Danny what I was robbed of, what Foxie stole from me the night she murdered my wife to be.
Sara is too damn young to be raising baby, and with a fuckin’ reject to boot, but this is her path. She chose it and accepted the terms eagerly. I asked her, “Sara, do you love that man? Do you want to raise this baby, because if the answer is no, I will see to it the baby goes to a good home? You don’t have to do this.”
“No, I love him, grandpa. I want to be with Danny,” she said as her father cursed to the heavens and all of hell.
Her brother and her father aren’t too happy with me or them, but they will come around. I told them I would handle Karly and Goddamn I just know her mouth may put me in my grave.
Right now, all she knows is that Sara is okay and that we will bring her home soon.
That’s all that matters. She will be in for one hell of a shock though when she sees the baby.
We all decided it’d be best if the rest of the club only knows what I decide to tell them.
I want a better life for us all.
All the killing and the rivalry needs to end.
Chapter 29
Sara
Drag Creek, Kentucky
YOU CAN’T GO THROUGH the things I have and come out on the other side un-phased. This is who I am now. This is what I want. My family can respect my choice or not, but it is what it is. I love Danny and he loves me. We are going to raise this baby and love him as our own.
I will be by his side as he brings the Devils Rejects into a new era. An era of peace where they can coexist alongside the Black Rebel Riders’ MC and the Born Sinners.
Now my grandpa, Grim and me only have to convince my mother of this.
He thought it would be best if he, Danny, the baby, and I approached her alone. My dad is still in shock and doesn’t want to believe that this is what I have chosen. Cole and I are in a strange place right now. I don’t want to judge him for what he did to those girls Danny told me about, but I can’t help but think he is a hypocrite when he says that Danny isn’t good enough for me.
They gave me an out before we went to the hospital, but I wasn’t about to abandon this little boy or Danny. Danny could have abandoned me, but he didn’t. He has been by my side the whole time. He has taken everything my father, my brother, and my grandfathers have dished out to him with pride and honor. He hasn’t backed down from them and he is slowly earning their respect.
Sure, it all happened fast, but life doesn’t slow down and wait for you. It just happens, and it is up to you what you make of it.
“Mom,” I call out as I walk in my grandfather’s house with Cain in my arms. We named him Cain Thomas after Danny’s father and mine.
“Sara,” she cries out running from the kitchen, but she freezes when she takes me in.
“Baby, I am so happy you are okay, but who is that?” She points to the bundle of joy I am cradling to my chest.
I smile at her. “This is your grandson, Cain.”
“Did Morgan have her baby and not tell anyone?” The confusion on her face would be priceless if I knew she would be laughing about this one day.
“No.” I shake my head as she looks between my grandpa and now Danny as he brings the diaper bag in.
“Then where did he come from?”
“Well...you see that’s the funny part of the story....” I pull the blanket back, so she can get a good look at him. She wants to smile but is wanting to be the tough guy and get answers right now.
“Sara.” She gives me the eye. The one that says spit it out or get it, so I let the truth rip.
“He’s mine, mom. Mine and Danny’s.” I motion my head toward Danny and he waves at her with his good hand.
“Dad, you want to explain this to me because it sounds like Sara is trying to tell me she had a baby with a guy I have never seen before, and she wasn’t pregnant the last time I laid eyes on her.”
“Uh...well...you see—why don’t we go over to the Roadhouse for a drink, and I can tell ye all about it while they put the baby down for a nap. It’s been a long trip.”
She shakes her head. “What’s going on, Sara?”
“Mom, I know this isn’t what you wanted for me, but it’s too late to go back. You and dad left this life, faked your own deaths even, but somehow it still managed to get its grip on Cole, and now the same has happened to me. You may not have chosen this or wanted it, but this life as ugly as it can be can be damn beautiful at times, and after what I went through I came out of it not only alive and in one piece, but with a man who loves me, and a little boy who thinks that I am his mom. So, you can accept all of us or none of us.”
She looks exasperated and at a loss for words. “Well, honey, of course I will accept all of you. I just am trying to understand.”
“Good. Now can we go get that drink and smoke a little smoke,” Grim tells her.
“Where’s my husband?”
“Probably hiding because of what I am about to tell you...” my grandpa says with a cheeky grin, ushering her out the door. He looks back over his shoulder and gives me a thumb up as the door closes behind them.
“Well that went better than I had hoped.” Danny beams at me and places the diaper bag on the kitchen counter.
“Wait for it. Three. Two. One.”
“You agreed to what!? Nash! I am gonna cut off all ya’lls’ balls,” her loud voice booms. I’m sure they can hear her back in California.
“That is my mother.”
Danny laughs. “Nice family. They all want to kill me, but nice family.”
“They’ll grow on you eventually.”
Danny walks toward me nodding. “Yeah, eventually. Maybe by Christmas your brother won’t want to kill me.”
