He didn’t stir.
“Dad!” I shook him violently. “Dad, please wake up.”
He didn’t move.
I started to sob and grow hysterical. “Dad! Dad!” I covered his body with mine and continued to sob. The sound of the ambulance was heard in the distance and they were coming near. My heart broke into a million pieces and my body gave out on me. “Dad, stay with me.”
Paramedics came out of the ambulance with the stretcher. “Move.” They shoved me aside and maneuvered my father onto a gurney.
I lay there, helpless. “No…”
They hoisted him up and carried him into the back of the ambulance. The red and blue lights circled in the alleyway. It shined directly in my eyes but my brain didn’t register it. The sounds of the city echoed in my ears but I didn’t notice them. All I could feel was my beating heart. All I could feel was the pain in my chest. All I could feel was hopelessness.
All I could feel was nothing.
