I frowned, squinting, as pieces clicked into place. An uneasy feeling tightened my chest, and I looked around the office, noting a familiar figure in a photograph on the wall. My father.
I inhaled sharply. “Uncle Michael? What are you doing here?” In the big-boss office of my agency. Wearing a many-thousand-dollar suit instead of the casual pants, loafers, and short-sleeved button-up that was his uniform during my childhood.
He wasn’t my real uncle—both my parents were only children—but he was my father’s best friend, and for some unknown reason, as a child I’d always called him Uncle Michael. I hadn’t seen him in at least thirty years. And I had no idea he worked in intelligence—I was a kid when we interacted sporadically, so why would I?—and definitely no idea that he was high up enough on the ladder to have snagged the director’s role.
The voice that came out of his mouth wasn’t the one I recalled from my fuzzy childhood memories. But it was intimately familiar. “Hello, Alexandra. It’s good to see you again. It’s been some time since we’ve seen each other in person, hasn’t it?”
The chill running down my spine actually made me shudder, and I fumbled out one word. “Lennon…?”
“Yes,” he said simply, smiling in a way that made me think of both the Cheshire Cat and Uncle Fester.
I collapsed into the leather chair on the other side of his desk. “You have got to be fucking kidding me.”
