  “They were looking for you.”

Elijah turned at the sound of his aunt’s voice, a drink in his hand.

“I had to get away.” He said with a forced smile that did not quite reached his startling blue-green eyes. His sable brown hair was a little tousled as if he had been running his fingers through the thick strands. His attractive face was hard, and his lips had a cynical twist that was unmistakable. Eleanor Wilton’s heart shuddered a little and the anger against the man and woman who had brought him to this had to be tamped down. “Are they gone?”

“Most of them have taken their leave after the food and drink had been consumed.” She walked further into the book-lined library, her hands clasped in front of her. “Old Mr. Engels was slurping down the liqueur as if it was his last.” She stared at the imposingly tall man standing in front of the large bay window. He had shed his black suit jacket and loosened the tie around his neck. The snowy shirt looked startling against his tan and there was a frown between his brows.

“I had to get away from the whispers and pitying looks.” Elijah lifted the drink and took a sip to try and wash the bitterness down.

“Darling, I don’t know what to say to you.”

“What is there to say?” He asked bitterly. “My father was having an affair with the woman I was engaged to and I only found it out when the rest of the world discovered it. Did you know?”

Her thin eyebrows drew together into a frown. “I am going to chalk that down to your grief and sorrow talking. You know I am on your side darling. Your father was ….” She paused as she sought for the word.

  “A bastard….! A lecherous dick….!”

“He was still your dad and ….”

“What? You want me to show respect towards a man like that?” Elijah asked bitterly as he strode over to the cabinet and refilled his glass. “If the accident had not happened, I would have been cuckolded by him and that bitch!”

  “Darling….”

“She told me she loved me!” He felt the rage building up inside him and wanted to choke something or someone. “Just a week ago! She told me that she loved me and could not wait to be my wife. I gave her a goddamned ring and he told me that she was a good match for me. All the while he was screwing her – Christ! How low could he have gotten? We were both screwing the same woman!” He downed the drink and almost choked as it slid down his throat. “Do you understand how it makes me sick to my stomach?”

Eleanor could not find the words to console him. It had been a week since the accident and the scandal surrounding it and he had had to put on a brave front while he went about taking care of business. Worse, he had to attend both funerals and had to endure the looks and whispers floating around. She had overheard a group of women discussing the shame and smirking about the fall of the lofty Wilton family. She had joined them right then and there and politely asked them in a caustic tone if they wanted some sherry to go with all that vitriol. The women, including Jane Bidders whom she had considered a close friend, had had the grace to look chastened.

“He was always like that.” She gestured helplessly. “He always had to compete with you, always had to prove that he was still young and attractive enough to attract the females. He was jealous of you darling. Of your youth and vitality and the way you had when it comes to business. Ian was never as astute as you are when it comes to making business decisions. You took over from him a few years ago and tripled the bottom line. He resented that and always referred to you as the golden boy.”

“I was his son!” Elijah’s eyes glittered. “Why would he be in competition with me and why take it that far. Why would he want to hurt me like that?”

“I cannot….” She turned at the discreet knock on the door. “Yes?”

“I am sorry to bother you Ms. Eleanor, Mr. Elijah,” Maggie, the housekeeper who had been with them for thirty years apologized. “But the last of the guests are leaving and a Mr. Johnson wanted to have a word.”

“I will be right there….” Eleanor began but Elijah shook his head.

“I will go. I cannot skulk inside the room forever. Tell him I will be right there, Maggie.”

“Right sir.” She nodded and left the room.

  “Are you sure?”

Elijah nodded and finished the drink. “I will be okay, Auntie. There is also the reading of the will that I have to endure and a meeting with the board on Monday as well as the PR department. It is a public relations nightmare and the negative reports of the press are not making things easy.”

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

He forced a slight smile. “Just by being here, you are helping. Thank you.”

“Where else would I be darling?” She watched him stride across the room and headed to the door. “He was a vain and spineless excuse for a man, but he was my brother and I loved him. More than that, I felt sorry for him.”

  “What the hell for?”

She lifted her head and stared him in the eyes. “He made a mess of his entire life darling. My brother was married to a wonderful woman who put up with his shenanigans and dalliances and still loved him despite it. She steered him right and kept him steady. When she died, it was as if the anchor had been yanked from his ship and he was left adrift.”

Elijah chuckled humorlessly. “You still defend him even after all this.”

“I am not defending him darling; I am just stating a fact. He was always weak and untethered, and he envied you your vitality and ambitious nature. He wanted to be you and could never accomplish it. I felt sorry for him - that is all.”

“I don’t.” Elijah said, a harsh look settling on his face. “If he was not already dead, he would have been dead to me.”

  *****

“What are you going to do?” Bethany asked her quietly as she gazed at her friend.

“I have to go away.” Samantha ran her hand around the back of her neck as she poured some more wine.

“It is not fair that you should leave!” Bethany said angrily. “You should report him to the police - honey; and get a restraining order.”

“We know how well that usually works out.” Samantha lifted the glass to her lips and had to quell the trembling of her hand. “It is just a piece of paper and it is his word against mine. I was the fool that got involved with a man I did not take the time to know. I got involved with someone I worked with and I should have known better.”

  “Where will you go?”

“I don’t know yet. As far away as possible. I can still work because everything I do is online.”

She came and sat next to her friend. “I have told him repeatedly that it is over between us and he will not listen - Beth, I have to do something drastic.”

  “Like running away from home?”

  “I need di
stance and time to myself. I have been in an abusive relationship, one that has stripped me of my self-esteem and confidence. I have to find a way to get myself back. I just want to go somewhere quiet where I can think and try to come up with reasons why I allowed this to happen to me.”

“It is not on you honey,” Bethany reached for her hand.

“Isn’t it? I stayed in a relationship even after the first time he dressed me down in front of that waiter. I saw the signs and refused to acknowledge them. I told myself that he was a creative being and they were prone to moods and sulks. I kept making excuses for him even when the truth was staring me in the face. Now I cannot shake him. His colossal ego will not accept that I do not want to have anything to do with him and he keeps sending flowers and gifts. He will not leave me alone. I went to the mall just yesterday and was going into Macy’s when I saw him standing outside as if he was waiting for me. He is stalking me Beth and it is making me uneasy I have to leave. I have become this person that is afraid of her own shadow. I cannot sleep and cannot eat – I jump when I hear the wind rattling the windowpanes and I am afraid to go outside in case he is lurking out there. I need time to get over this and get my life back.”

“I wish there was something I could do.”

“This is my battle and I have to fight it. I have already taken up too much of your time by asking you to spend nights here. You have a family.”

“And Brett does not mind me staying with you. He is so angry that he wants to confront that bastard and wring his neck.” Bethany’s dark brown eyes blazed. “I cannot believe that I encouraged you to go out with him. He appeared so charming and showed such impeccable manners and his good looks blinded me into thinking that he was a nice guy.”

“He fooled me too.” Samantha admitted.

“And just when you were determined to take some time off from dating.” Bethany made a sympathetic noise in her throat as she stared at her friend. Samantha Annmarie Howe was a tall, willowy African American beauty with pixie like face and large dark brown eyes. She had a haunting beauty that drew men to her and made them want to wrap her in their arms and protect her from the big bad wolf. Her thick dark hair was cut very short in a style that highlighted her narrow face and showed off her excellent bone structure. She was five feet six inches tall and walked with a grace that had her getting second looks. She had lost both her parents’ three years ago when she was twenty-six and it had been a very hard blow or her. The accident that had cost her parents lives had also managed to drain the life out of her and she had gone from being a vivacious outgoing woman to one who preferred her own company, never really letting anyone in. She had stopped partying and had focused her attention on her job as online editor. Damon Campbell had come into her life six months ago when she had been hired to edit his latest book and he had managed to coax her out of her shell and get her to go out with him. He had lulled her into thinking that he was a gentleman by being gentle with her and telling her all she needed to hear. She had not seen the signs of the ‘real him’ until several months after they were going out and by then she had been so devastated by his subterfuge that she had almost been unable to fight back.

Samantha had grown up in a very loving home with parents who adored her and had always been there for her. She had seen her mother and father argue and had seen them make up just as quickly. She had never witnessed her dad raising a hand to her mother and had been shocked when Damon had slapped her across the face because she disagreed with a line of sentence he had included in a chapter of his book. She had been so shocked that she had sat there for a moment and had no idea what to do. She had endured the verbal abuse and chalked them down as creative differences, but she could not make excuses for the physical one. She had told him that very night that it was over between them and he had refused to accept it. Now she had no choice but to go away to somewhere he would never find her.

  *****

“Enough!” Elijah’s steely voice cut through the babble of confusion and was enough to put an end to the discussion. He had been sitting at his position at the head of the board table, listening to the various opinions of the members of the board who had been members for more years than he was born, at least some of them and had heard the underlying scorn as they discussed what had taken place and the consequences. Wilton Industries had a reputation to uphold and had been in the family for so many years that it had its unique place in the business world as well as in society. He had gone through the weekend in a daze and had stayed locked up in his suite, purportedly getting some reports together but the thoughts and his own isolation had almost been his undoing. His father and Isobel’s treachery had cut to the core and was something he could not discuss, not even with his aunt whom he was close to. She had fooled him, with her laughing manner and coy behavior and made him to believe that the lovemaking they had indulged in when he had found the time was something she looked forward to.

He remembered the conversation between them two weeks ago and he should have picked something from that.

“You don’t have time for me!” She had complained with a pout as he got dressed. He had never brought her to the manor, when he wanted to be with her, preferring to go to her place and spend the night.

“There is this oil company we are taking over and it is posing quite a challenge. I am in discussions with the management team and it is proving tricky. I promise to make it up to you.”

“Ian seems to have a lot of time on his hands.” She had said referring to his father.

His mouth had tightened as he buttoned his shirt. “Dad has time on his hands because he has decided to grace us with his presence just once a week.”

“We all deserve to have some fun darling. You never seem to have any?”

“We went to the Opera last week and I could hardly keep my eyes open.” He had teased her.

“You made the sacrifice for me and I am incredibly grateful.”

“You should be.” He had told her as he sat next to her on the bed. She had not bothered to get dressed and her creamy white breasts were exposed to him. Isobel Whitely was a socialite and the only daughter of a Senator and a judge and was incredibly spoilt. She was also beautiful and knew it. They knew each other for ages and had somehow fallen into a relationship with his father hinting that they should make it permanent. Elijah supposed that he should have seen through the subterfuge. Ian Wilton never did anything without a motive. Elijah had ignored his philandering and his lack of interest in the company, determined to carry on the tradition of his ancestors.

Shaking his head, he directed his thoughts back to the men staring at him. “We have a company to run gentlemen and I am sure the fallout from what happened will be old news by the end of the week. In the meantime, there is still the matter of Pharmaton. We are acquiring a company that is in dire need of overhauling.”

“I hate to be the one to bring it up my dear boy and I am in support of what you must be going through, but we will have to address the elephant in the room. Your father’s selfish ways have put us into a tight spot. The stocks were driven down by the scandal and the whispers are not going away.” Albert Townsend was one of the senior members of the board and had always taken the liberty to speak out.
