Julie the Pianist, page 4
“Thank you, Anise.” I picked up her hand and laced her fingers in with mine. She smiled as I pulled her over to brush the back of her hand against my cheek. “Will you help me up?”
“Just rest,” she said.
“I’d rather do that in my room,” I said. “With you. Will you keep me steady?”

Somehow, we made it to my room, got undressed, and slid between the sheets. I think most of the effort was on Anise though. I just sort of floated along behind. I lifted my head to look at Anise’s face one more time before settling back down to rest onto her bare shoulder.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“In Miss Baxter’s extra-curricular room, every time I got freaked out by the crop, I tried to count your freckles. I kept losing count, so I thought I’d try again.”
“So how many are there?”
“I haven’t got any idea. Can’t keep my eyes open.”
I felt Anise’s fingers in my hair, smoothing it out, caressing me.
“You sure you’re not disappointed we didn’t…you know.”
Anise tucked her chin to her chest and glanced down at me. “This isn’t the last time you’re inviting me up to your room is it?”
“Um, no, I don’t think so. I mean, I hope not.”
I felt her body shake as she chuckled. “Then no,” she said. “I’m not disappointed.”
“Anise?” I yawned. “There’s more to learn, isn’t there? About living here. About being one of Miss Baxter’s girls.”
“There is,” she said. “But it’s all wonderful, I promise.”
Anise kissed me on the tip of my nose and I closed my eyes.
