“That’s pretty smooth, Isis,” Eugene told her. Her eyes darted every which way before Eugene realized she couldn’t see him because of the way the couch faced.

“Eugene, why are you not at the lab?” she asked when he finally stood up. “And why are you all dressed up?”

“It’s the Fourth of July party, so the Mistress gave us the day off,” Eugene explained. It wasn’t a total lie, though. It had been Seventh that gave them the day off.

“I didn’t realize Pestilence was that patriotic? What about the clothes?” Isis asked, crossing her arms over her chest.

“We were LARPing,” Bartholomew jumped in to save Eugene.

“As what, Mission Impossible?” Isis asked, raising an eyebrow.

“More like Bond, you know, From Russia with Love,” Eugene said with a smile. The rest of the guys nodded in agreement, even Constantine.

“Well, I’m proud of all of you. But I recommend a shower now,” Isis told them. “You all smell like wet dogs” She scrunched up her nose. “No offense Constantine.”

“None taken,” Constantine told her. “They do reek to all bloody hell.” He wiped his whiskers.

“I’m off to bed. I had a very long couple of days,” Isis told the boys. “By the looks of you guys, you all did too. See you for dinner,” she told them and headed towards her room.

“She has a point. I recommend you all head for the shower and then bed,” Constantine told them. “I’ll hold down the fort.”

Eugene didn’t need to be told twice, and nobody else did either. Everyone moved at once, but they took their time.

“Hey Eugene,” Constantine said before Eugene walked out the door behind Bob. “Not bad for a rookie. Nice job.” Constantine wasn’t known for empty compliments, so this meant a lot to Eugene. “Nice to have you in the family.”

“Thank you, Constantine,” Eugene said with a huge smile on his face.

It was a really good day after all. Now he just needed a shower and some sleep, then life would be perfect.

  About the Author

  D. C. Gomez was born in the Dominican Republic and at the age of ten moved with her family to Salem, Massachusetts. After eight years in the magical “Witch City,” she moved to New York City to attend college. D. C. enrolled at New York University to study film and television. In her junior year of college, she had an epiphany. She was young, naive, and knew nothing about the world or people.

In an effort to expand her horizons and be able to create stories about humanity, she joined the US Army. She proudly served for four years. Those experiences shaped her life. Her quirky, and sometimes morbid, sense of humor was developed. She has a love for those who served and the families that support them. She currently lives in the quaint city of Wake Village, Texas, with her furry roommate, Chincha.
