For my Family
Sometimes I wonder about my life. I lead a small life - well, valuable, but small - and sometimes I wonder, do I do it because I like it, or because I haven't been brave? So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn't it be the other way around?
Nora Ephron — “You Got Mail”
Prologue
“Dear Ms. Whitlock, this is Talon Spencer from Nicholson, Nicholson Attorneys at Law. We need to speak to you about Mrs. Therese Rosenfield. Please call us at your earliest convenience.”
* * *
“Dear Ms. Whitlock, this is Talon Spencer again. We’ve been trying to reach you and your brother, but neither one of you has responded to our messages. It’s imperative you call us at your earliest convenience to sort through Mrs. Rosenfield’s assets. Unfortunately, your grandmother died three days ago. We’re sorry for your loss.”
* * *
“Ms. Whitlock, thank you for your message. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday, nine a.m. to four p.m. We look forward to hearing from you soon.”
* * *
“Ms. Whitlock, this is Talon Spencer again. I understand you live out of state, and it’s almost impossible to connect at the same time, but can you make an effort? We have to handle your inheritance.”
* * *
“Ms. Whitlock, this is Talon Spencer. Yes, we can discuss your grandmother’s will in a videoconference. Please reach out to us at a more convenient time. Or call me on my phone. Again, I’m sorry about your loss.”
Chapter One
MythicalReader33: You know what’s weird?
Anonimouse: That you never say hello, just throw a question as if we’re in the middle of a conversation?
&nb sp; MythicalReader33: Are you always this irritating?
Anonimouse: You sound like my sister.
MythicalReader33: If more than one person notices an issue… you might have to acknowledge that you have a problem.
Anonimouse: :unamused: emoji.
Anonimouse: Let’s go back to your first text. What’s weird in your mythical world of books?
MythicalReader33: It’s about real life, not the latest book I’ve read. I found out I had a grandmother.
Anonimouse: Can you elaborate? Why didn’t you know about her before?
MythicalReader33: This is my maternal grandmother. Mom died when I was too young. Honestly, I don’t know much about her or her family.
Anonimouse: How did you find out about her?
MythicalReader33: Her lawyer has been calling me. The first call only mentioned her name. I had no idea who she was talking about. The second announced my grandmother was dead.
Anonimouse: I’m sorry for your loss.
MythicalReader33: I can’t comprehend why the lawyer didn’t try to reach me via email or on my phone, just kept leaving voicemails.
MythicalReader33: She’s lucky I have a landline. What if I didn’t? Would she just ignore me?
MythicalReader33: Sorry, I’m rambling. I’m still a little shocked about this. And pissed because if they had tried harder, maybe I could’ve met her.
Anonimouse: Sorry again about your loss. Is there something I can do for you?
MythicalReader33: If I weren’t in Rome, I would say let’s play a video game, but… I have to drag my ass out of bed and into the shower. It’s time to work.
MythicalReader33: What are you doing?
Anonimouse: I’m going to work.
MythicalReader33: Isn’t it, like, four in the morning on your side of the world?
Anonimouse: Nope. It’s not even ten p.m.
MythicalReader33: What do you do for a living?
Anonimouse: Ha, wouldn’t you like to know?
MythicalReader33: Sometimes I do, but then I remember I would have to tell you more about myself, and I like to keep this… casual.
Anonimouse: I’ll be around if you need to chat.
MythicalReader33: Sometimes I think you’re a fifty-some-year-old man, living in his mother’s basement, smoking pot and playing all day.
Anonimouse: Ha! The last thing I would want to do is live with my mother. ((shivers with despair))
MythicalReader33: Can people shiver with despair? Also, I doubt your mom is that bad.
Anonimouse: Did you ever watch the movie Mommy Dearest?
MythicalReader33: I had to google that. Never heard of the book, the actress, or the movie. Now I need to know more.
Anonimouse: Mom is worse, but we all love her.
MythicalReader33: I just downloaded the audiobook. I’m now intrigued by the ‘no wire hangers’ quote.
Anonimouse: If you have nightmares…
MythicalReader33: I’ll blame you!
MythicalReader33: Talk to you later, mouse.
Anonimouse: It’s Anonimouse. Talk soon.
Chapter Two
To: Danny Boy
From: Enid
Subject: Where were you?
I expected to see you at the videoconference. This is a family emergency. Just because you said you don’t know who this woman is doesn’t mean you can ignore me.
Our grandmother left you some money. I get her bookstore and her house in Paradise Bay.
Yes, you heard right. You get the cash, and I… what am I supposed to do with a bookstore and a house in the middle of—? Okay, I confess that I haven’t verified if this town is even real.
If it is, I’ll quit my job and move there.
Good luck with your company and Dad.
Enid
To: Enid
From: Danny Boy
Subject: Where was I?
I was working.
According to the internet, Paradise Bay is north of San Francisco. It’s part of wine country. Why would you want to move to a town that’s smaller than Central Park? You wouldn’t last more than a day.
You can’t just quit your job. You know what that means, right? No more pretty shoes and books.
I’ll call you when I can.
Dan (not Danny Boy)
Chapter Three
MythicalReader33: She left me my dream, and I don’t know what to do…
Anonimouse: Hello to you too.
MythicalReader33: Hi.
Anonimouse: Who left you a dream? I’m confused.
MythicalReader33: My grandmother made my dream come true. Do you know how much I’ve always wanted to start my own business?
Anonimouse: I didn’t, but now I do.
MythicalReader33: I told you once, if I didn’t have to work, I would set up a business. Then you said that being your own boss is not what it’s cracked up to be.
Anonimouse: That sounds like something I would say. I stand by that, but if it’s your dream, go live it. Go MythicalReader33! ((adds cheerleader music))
