“Same.” Laine headed for the bathroom and called over her shoulder, “Did you write your vows?”

  “Yep. All done. Did you?”

  “I’m going to wing it.”

  “Jeeze, you’re good.”

“Good liar.” She laughed and shut the bathroom door.

  Paradise Café. Mirage Hotel.

The wedding breakfast was scheduled for ten and all the guests were seated outdoors by the pool when Farrell and Laine joined them.

Big smile on his face, Farrell said, “Good morning, family. This is our big day and I’m so happy I can hardly think, so I won’t be doing much talking.”

“That’s a relief,” said Blaine and everyone laughed.

The breakfast was extravagant and the service exceptional. Everyone was in a party mood. It would be a happy, happy day for Farrell and Laine.

As they got up to leave, Laine pulled Montana aside. “I realize this is short notice, but would you stand up with me as my maid of honor?”

Montana teared up and she couldn’t speak right away. She nodded her blonde head and then found the words. “Yes, I want to.”

“Great, thanks. Come to our suite when it’s time to get ready. Farrell is going to get dressed in your room with Neil and Tommy.”

  “What time?” asked Montana.

“Two-thirty? Do you think that’s too early? I don’t want to hurry because I suck at putting makeup on and I don’t want to look like a clown.”

Montana smiled. “I’ll come to your room at two-thirty. I’m so excited for all of this and Neil is too. We’re so happy for you and Farrell.”

  Pecan Creek. Texas.

Travis was up early and he took the dogs out for a walk to the river. While he was at the trailer, he missed the woods and the river and the serenity of his own private piece of paradise.

He was glad the Donovan boys knew who they were. They could believe they had a family, or not. The choice was up to them.

When he got back to the house, he made coffee and called Annie to tell her that the job was done. What he didn’t tell her was the part where he and Lukas drove back to the clubhouse after the explosion to make sure there were no runners.

There had been a couple of boys that got out and while finishing them off, Travis picked up a stray bullet in his arm. Just a flesh wound and nothing to worry about. He could fix it himself.

“I’ll have Blaine make some calls, Travis. He’ll talk to the right people at San Angelo PD and take care of the scene. You and the rest of the boys all okay?”

  “Perfect, Annie-girl. I love you.”

  “Same.”

  Fisher Lake Trailer Park.

Dean and Glen sat at their broken down kitchen table wondering what they should do next.

“If you and me are really Donovans, we should change our last name,” said Glen.

“Don’t get in a hurry,” said Dean. “It might not be true.”

“Lukas said we could have a DNA test and Spyder or the Donovans would pay for it.”

“We should do that to make sure,” said Dean. “We’ve made enough mistakes… like working for Zoloff and joining a shit MC. We need to find out who we are and take a different direction—just like Spyder said.”

Wedding Chapel. Mirage Hotel and Casino. Las Vegas.

At a quarter to four the guests took their seats in the wedding chapel. The organist played soft music in the background while Linda, the coordinator, buzzed around making sure everything was perfect. She lit the candles on the fireplace mantle, took one last glance around and then she stepped into the adjoining room.

Annie sat next to Lenny, Lucy on the other side of her and then Jackson. Lucy was a lover of weddings and all things romantic, and that was the main reason Annie had brought the kids with her.

“I’m so excited for this, Mommy. I can’t wait until I get married.”

“I can wait,” said Jackson. “I don’t like wearing a suit.” He pulled at his tie and Annie smiled at her son.

At precisely four p.m., the minister stepped out of the anteroom and took his place in front of the fireplace. Neil and Farrell were right behind the clergyman and they both looked so handsome in their matching suits, Annie had to brush a tear away.

“Are you crying, Mommy?” asked Lucy.

“Weddings always make me cry. I can’t help it.”

Lucy opened her small purse and passed Annie a tissue.

Moments later, the organist pounded out the traditional wedding march and all the guests rose to their feet.

Montana was first down the aisle wearing the new dress she’d bought in Arlington. A pale green silk sheath that looked incredible on her slim body.

Neil turned his head and sucked in a breath when he saw her. Montana did look gorgeous and when it was her turn to be married to Neil, she would make a beautiful bride.

Next was Laine on the arm of General Tavestock. He looked so happy to be walking his only daughter down the aisle.

Laine’s dress was gorgeous. She was a no-fuss person and the dress she had chosen for her wedding reflected her personality. Strapless white silk that hugged her muscular body and hung in uneven lengths to the floor.

She would be the photographer’s dream in that dress.

Farrell turned his head as she reached the front of the chapel. He smiled and held out his hand for her.

The general stood with his daughter until the minister asked who was giving the bride away.

“I am,” said the general and he stepped back.

Once Laine and Farrell were together in front of the minister, the ceremony began in earnest.

When it was time for the vows, Farrell was up first and Annie was nervous for him. He hadn’t asked for help writing them and she hadn’t offered.

He faltered a little at the beginning but became stronger as he went along.

Turning to face his bride, he said, “Laine, I promise to take care of you and always place you ahead of anything and everyone else in my life. You are the first thing I think of in the morning and my last thought before I sleep. No one will ever take your place in my heart. I love you, Laine.”

Annie was in tears when Farrell finished and she reached for Lenny’s hand.

Laine was next and her voice was clear and steady. She would be the emotionally stable half of the marriage. Exactly the type of person Farrell needed.

“Farrell, I promise to always be honest and to give you a straight answer. I will never lie to you or cheat on you. I’ll share your baggage and help you through your dark patches. I know there are many. I’ve learned that much about you. You can confide in me and trust me to keep your darkest secrets. I love you, Farrell.”

After the vows came the exchanging of the rings and Farrell sounded a little more relaxed. That part went smoothly.

The minister had a few words of encouragement for the happy couple and the deed was done.

“I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride.”

Farrell took Laine in his arms and laid a hot passionate kiss on her in front of everyone, including her father, the general.

Annie watched the general’s face and smiled. He was definitely not ready for his little girl to get married to a big tough cop.

Hugs all around after the ceremony and then it was on to the steakhouse to celebrate.

Heritage Steakhouse. Mirage Hotel and Casino.

Linda Devon, the coordinator, was ready with trays of champagne when they arrived at the steakhouse.

When everyone was seated at the table, Neil, as the best man, was first to speak. “I’m not sure I can find the right words to talk about my brother, Farrell. Since I was eleven years old and we rode out of San Angelo on Farrell’s Harley with the Devils chasing us and shooting at us, Farrell has been everything to me. Laine is a very lucky girl to have Farrell Donovan for a husband.”

With tears in his eyes, Neil raised his glass in a toast. “To the bride and groom.”

“Thanks, Neil,” said Blaine as he got to his feet. “After that testimonial to Farrell, I’m not sure I can top it so I won’t even try. Farrell is my foster brother. We were raised together at Coulter-Ross by our mother, Annie. The best mother any boys could have. She is the only reason we all turned out so well and she’s the only reason we are alive today. I love you, Mom.”

Next on his feet was General Tavestock. “A wonderful speech, Ranger Blackmore. I know very little about your mother, but I intend to find out much more.” He inhaled a breath and continued. “All I want to do is welcome Farrell into the Tavestock family and say that I’m proud to have him as a son-in-law.”

He raised his glass. “To the groom.”

Once the toasts were over, dinner was served and it was a wonderful meal. The chef outdid himself making everything special for Laine and Farrell’s wedding.

After dessert and coffee, the bride and groom passed out generous slices of their wedding cake for everyone to take to their rooms for later, or to take home.

  Summerlin. Las Vegas.

After tearful goodbyes to the family, Farrell and Laine left the restaurant in a euphoric state. They went up to their room and packed up for the move to the Summerlin house for the week.

Laine hadn’t been to Annie’s Vegas house before and when Farrell unlocked the door and ushered her inside, she was dazzled by how beautiful it was.

“No wonder you wanted to stay here for our honeymoon, Farrell. Look at this place. I love the flowers and that was so sweet of your mother to buy us chocolates too. She went to a lot of trouble for us.”

Farrell opened the fridge and stared at all the food and beer Annie had bought for them. “Yeah, she did.”

“That was a nice speech Blaine made,” said Laine.

“He’s good with words when he needs to be. Been on TV at press conferences hundreds of times.”

“I never get over how young he is.”

“Boy genius,” said Farrell. “That’s what they said when he got his law degree. He’s fuckin smart, Laine. He runs the Agency, two lawyers’ offices and Powell Corp.”

“I don’t know how he can handle all that.”

Farrell grabbed a beer out of the fridge and said, “It ain’t easy. Want to see the pool?”

  “I sure do.”

They walked outside to the covered patio and stood beside the sparkling water. Farrell kissed the bride and was happier than he’d ever been.

  Mirage Hotel and Casino.

Annie was in her suite with Lenny and the kids getting ready to go home when Tommy came in with Neil and Montana.

“Tommy is staying until tomorrow and then coming home with me and Montana to Arlington.”

“That’s a great idea, Tommy,” said Annie. “Have you heard from Lukas?”

“Yep. He called and said it was all done. Dean and Glen know who they really are and the Devils are done for.”

“Excellent,” said Annie. “I’d like to stay another day with y’all but I can’t. Declan is alone at the roadhouse. No Tyler and no Scarlett. I have to get back and help him.”

Annie hugged everybody. When they were gone, she said to Lenny, “One more thing before we leave for the airport.”

  “Sure, what is it?”

“I have to find out why Adam didn’t come to the wedding. I’ll be right back. Stay with the kids.”

With a bad feeling plaguing her, Annie took the elevator two floors up to Adam’s room. He hadn’t invited her up, but she knew the number. She knocked three times and he didn’t answer.

  “Adam, open the door.”

  She called Lenny.

  “Hey, boss.”

“Lenny, get the manager or security, or whoever can open Adam’s door for a medical emergency. Adam isn’t answering.”

“Are you sure he’s in there?”

  “Nope. Sure of nothing.”

“Yep. I’ll be as quick as I can.”

Annie stood outside Adam’s door watching hotel guests come and go for a good ten minutes before Lenny came running with Blaine and a woman who had a master key card.

“Go ahead, ma’am,” said Blaine. “There’s a Texas Ranger in there with health issues and he may need help.”

“What kind of issues? I’ll need to file a report.”

“A recent chest wound, ma’am,” said Blaine. “He was shot in the line of duty.”

“I see.” She inserted her card. The green light came on and Blaine pushed the door open and charged into the room. He took a look at Adam and shouted, “Ambulance and we need Narcan stat.”

“Run, Lenny,” said Annie. “There’s some in my suitcase in our suite. The bags are right inside the door.”

Blaine tilted his head and gave Annie a funny look. “Mom, why would you have Narcan in your luggage?”

“Since Linc died, I carry it with me. Just a habit.”

“A crazy habit, Mom, but one that might save Adam’s life.” Blaine held the empty vial of fentanyl in his hand. “None left. He took it all.”

Lenny came running back and Blaine administered the spray like he’d done many times before when they’d come across an OD.

  Adam opened his eyes.

They were at least fifteen minutes ahead of the paramedics. When the medics arrived, Blaine said, “Drug OD,” and handed them the vial. “I administered Narcan and he’s breathing.”

Annie stood at the door and watched them take Adam out on a stretcher. “I can’t do it. I can’t.”

“Take Annie and the kids to the plane, Lenny. I’ll be along as soon as I hand off the scene to LVPD.”

  “Copy, boss.”

On the drive to the airport, Annie said, “I’ll make sure nobody tells Farrell about Adam until tomorrow. I’m not going to ruin their wedding night.”
