  Introduction

A hot wind batters the rocks outside and I laid flat on the bunker bed, letting the streams of cool air flow over my bare body from the ventilation shaft in front of me.

With a light moan I am reminded of her presence, that curvy body that melds into my right side, a picturesque face that nuzzles into my neck.

  My mate.

I turned to her and my gaze adopts a softness that I am not entirely comfortable with. The night before, we had made love, consummated our passion and sealed the mating pact, it was an evening that fulfilled all of the lustful fantasies that have been brewing in both of our minds ever since we escaped from the base. Two generals belonging to opposing races in an interstellar war now laying on a bed together after a night of passion…It was counterintuitive to every single teaching that the Kanosian government tried to drill into my mind and the minds of all Kanosian warriors.

I rest my gaze upon that curvy body and once more my mind is filled with lustful thoughts. There is something that grants an even more momentous feeling, however, the feeling I get when I look upon that wonderfully gentle expression on her face. It granted me a warmth and joy that couldn’t be matched by the pleasures of battle, food, or anything else in this universe for that matter.

We had a mission to attend to, I knew that, we had to free their men from the clutches of the warlord that has taken over our base and was now demanding a ransom from the human and Kanosian governments. My goal now is not only the safety of my men, but the safety of the woman beside me, leader of the human forces…and my mate. Her safety was paramount and I would not rest until both her men and mine were freed.

She was my mate and I would protect her, no matter the cost.

  CHAPTER ONE

  Denise

There was an idea in my mind, this lingering hope that was continuing to grow. I had thought that I had made a spot for myself and my crew here, protecting an important yet isolated refueling station. There was no one that could pierce either the light years of guarded human territory or the asteroid fields. There was hope that lingered that confirmed my success, that reinforced the idea that this was going to be forever, this hope was going to be forever.

So why was I being dragged along by these rudimentary steel cuffs? I had at least thought I would have been given the honor of magnetic cuffs, even if it wouldn't have made a difference.

"You won't get away with this!" I snarled and the soldier guiding me down the hall only laughed.

"Sure human. What are you going to do to us huh? Your entire force is neither destroyed or captured so you better get used to the feeling of these bonds." he stated and tugged on the chains wrapped around my wrists. I only scowled.

Damn Kanosians. Just met the bastards a few years ago and suddenly they wanted a war. How bloodthirsty could you be?

We had been stuck on this cursed planet to defend a small refueling outpost here. The same refueling outpost that we were currently in. No one would have even gave a shit about this place if it weren't for this building and the fact that the outpost lingered on a flight path that was used to funnel trade between the human city of Arana which laid on a water planet a couple of light years away, not too long actually, and a Phoraltions outpost, Phoraltions being one of the other races in the galaxy that weren't involved in this stupid war. I thought that we had enough troops, 100 seemed plenty and the fact that there hadn't been an attack on here before and the fact that we were pretty far into human territory reassured me.

  The Kanosians were crafty however.

They sent a ship through a portion of the star system where the magnetic field was a bit weaker than others. This screwed up our readings and allowed them to mask their signatures more effectively until they got close enough to us to attack. Now I was down 50 men, the rest of them were captured. If I had to guess there were about 60 Kanosians that were here at the moment, you usually need about 5 humans to take one Kanosian down, they were incredibly effective in battle. The only way that this war was even kept a little bit even was due to the fact that humans had colonized a lot more land and were a bit craftier with their tech. Unfortunately the first advantage was not in play during this battle.

"You know the boss is curious about you for some reason. He would always interrogate the enemy in the common room but I guess he likes you. Don't ask me why, I haven't got a clue." said the soldier as he pressed some buttons on a control panel on my right, causing the door in front of me to open. The large metal plates that composed the door slide to the side and I am tossed in, there was a small bed mat off to the side along with a tray with some tea, next to the bad mat was a variety of papers and files.

Great so I was assuming this man was going to be seducing me? Could a Kanosian and a human even mate? Ugh that was disgusting!

"Enjoy commander. Not every day you get to have a conversation with the mighty Maloq." stated the soldier as he shut the door and walked away.

The room was about 20 feet by 10 feet, decent in size but not really anything extraordinary, at least not in my eyes. I thought that a general would have had a more lavish base but I suppose that I was wrong. I find myself sitting on the bedroll and staring at the blank concrete room, hoping that the rumors about Kanosians weren't true.

Did they really eat people? Did they like torture? What were these Kanosians really like?

I had only seen action a couple of times before this, I was a gunner on a craft heading out to the frontier with a high Kanosian presence so i've been in my fair share of firefights. That was a much younger me though, now that I was approaching my 30s I wanted something else, something not nearly as daunting so I signed up to command this outpost. Really I thought that it would be a breeze considering how isolated it was. Its importance hadn't yet dawned on me and over the last couple of months that i've spent here i've come to like the place quite a bit. It was dry and somewhat hot, but there was always someone coming and going so we always got updates on the latest news and fresh food whenever we pleased.

  And then the door opens.

The first thing I thought when he stepped off of the craft that had bombed us to bits was "Wow." He stood tall and wore a suit of red plated armor and under that was that rippling, muscular red body. He was incredibly intimidating yet he didn't give the impression of being someone that was overtly brutish or cruel. On the contrary he seemed...decent. He had cared for his men and offered me a great deal of leniency should I have complied and granted him the info that he wanted. Unfortunately that was not the case since I had rejected his offer and he had my people locked up in makeshift cells that he had set up using some portable energy fields in the basement.

My description of him would be a man that stood at about 7 feet tall with impressive claws on both his hands and feet that could be retracted at any moment. He had brilliant piercing purple eyes and had two horns that jutted out of the center of his head. They were about a foot long and curled behind his skull, forming some sort of protective shell for the top of his head. His legs were incredibly muscular, as was the case for all Kanosians since they loved crawling on those wild savannahs back home so much, but his upper body was nothing to joke about either. He was the perfect warrior, a specimen that was beyond any measurement of human fitness. He was in his own category.

  And he was incredibly arousing.

But still. He was the enemy.

"What the hell do you want Maloq?" I asked him, spitting on the ground in front of him. He merely frowned and sat far away from me, on the other side of the room against the stone. I thought that he would have sat next to me on the mattress and tried to use his charms but...perhaps he was less brutish than I had thought.

"Just to tell you of what we're planning. We're taking you back to the nearest base and dropping you there. Of course we can't let you go but if you cooperate and tell me about any other hidden outposts on this rock then I'll put in the good word to make your living conditions a bit more comfortable. All I need is a bit of information on the computers here, their passwords, and the current flight trajectories. Everything. Do that and I'll put in the good word and they should release you soon after. Doesn't matter if you go and tell your bosses, we'll have the entire place on lock down by then." he stated and I growled.

"And if I don't?" I asked and he smiled.

"Well I suppose we're going to be at odds then won't we? If you don't tell me then well ...you're going to go to Zaraki and spend the rest of your time there until the war is over. If you give me what I want, however, I'll make sure you won't get locked up in the madhouse." he states.

I turn my head away and gazed at the stone wall, biting my lip and growling. How the hell did I end up here after all of this training and effort? I had such confidence in the security of this base and my skills that when he took me by surprise by flying through that guarded path it was a tremendous blow to my ego. I can only stoke the fi re in my heart, the anger that I had, and eventually I began to lash out at him while he collects the small jug of water near my feet and pours himself a glass. His long fingers wrapped around the glass, those claws pressing against the cup as he lifted the drink up to his mouth.

"I heard stories about the Kanosians you know? Heard stories about how you eat people. Stories about how you treat your prisoners with such cruelty. Don't think you can fool me the same way Kanosian. I don't trust your promises for a second and I am sure as hell not giving you any details. So consider this a rejection." I spat and he nodded, smiling slightly.

"I had expected this sort of attitude from you. I was reading up on your file, what was stored here anyways. Graduated and then signed up for war huh? Or rather was drafted and participated in some battles before heading back here. Quite the story, described as fiery, defiant, and...Witty? Hmm that's something I didn't expect." he teased and I only growled.

"Oh trust me pal. You don't want to see me witty with you." I muttered below my breath and he takes a seat that was a bit closer now, about 10 feet away from me.

"Why do you think we fight this war? Him? For the honor of our people. That's something you can understand can't you? You can understand the want to defend and guard the blood that runs through your veins but yet you still fight me. Yet you still battle. Really what worth is this outpost anyways? It's a backwater with no real substantial worth. Sure it may hold a bit more than the smallest places in your species' control but still...just some details about it, just something about this worthless rock and i'll free you." he states, his forearms sliding against his knee, I laughed.

"I'll get my life and this base back once they hear about the result. Ships are already on their way for reinforcements as you can probably tell from the signals. Then we'll see who's laughing." I laughed and he smirked. His facial expression was unmoving as if he had been desensitized to all the war games and all the strategies that i could ever bring up. I watched every smooth facial feature light up on that red skin, his high cheekbones curling against his eyes, his perfectly chiseled jawline whipping back and forth as he rolled his tongue along his fangs and clicked it.

"They'll be stopped without any issue, my forces are already setting up all the proper defense mechanisms. By the time those ships finally do arrive we'll be more than ready." he states and I glared at the ground, the cold grey concrete glaring back at me as I heard his claws tapping the glass.

"So why do you need me here?" I asked him and frowned.

"I was hoping to get some details, like I said, but sounds like I'm going to come up short this time." he said with a frown.

"Must be disappointing." I muttered and he shakes his head, those short horns cut through the air, their ebony colored shapes whipped over the ground.

"Just expected it.' he muttered and gets to his feet before I heard something.

"You hear that?" I asked and he glanced at me.

  "....Yeah....." he muttered.

There was this low rumbling rushing through the building, it pierced the walls and rang through the foundations, impossible to ignore. I find myself getting to my feet and walking closer to the door and he doesn't stop me. He walks beside me and stands there, the two of us looking at one another in confusion.

"Is that one of your ships?" I asked him, it sounded like something was roaring past the base.

"No, no that's...." he stated before his radio chipped on.

"Oh commander. Thank the gods I was able to reach you! Enemy ships approaching fast! About two large tankers!" he shouted, tankers being these large metallic cubes that floats through boosters on the bottom. They were designed to carry a large amount of soldiers and...They weren't exactly used by humans that often.

  "Kanosians?" he asked.

"Yes sir! It does seem like it!" shouted the soldier. Maloq glanced at me, frowning.

"Stay here." he muttered and ran out of the room, leaving me alone in the cold and dark. I immediately began to look around for ways to leave and caught the metal door with my foot right as it was shutting behind him. I pulled it back and glanced out, everyone was gone. The room was still completely sparse so I couldn't find any weaponry so I merely continued onwards, my boots slid against the concrete as the air conditioned breeze brushed my chest. I was at the end of the hallway with two paths directing to my left and my right. I listened in and detected that the battle was going on in the leftward direction so I headed right to avoid the vast majority of his troops. I find myself travelling down the cold concrete hall until reaching what I was looking for, the workspace.

"Alright come on come on." I muttered as I walked over to the workbench. I kneed a button on the counter and a laser beam turned on that was sandwiched in between two pillars on the workbench. I leaned in with my back facing the laser and directed my hands at a certain spot so that the laser would slice through my bonds.

I had to take great care not to permanently burn and cut my hands so I was a bit careful as I feel the heated laser washing over the two rails of steel that connected the cuffs. All of this tech and still the most effective way to keep someone bound were through some steel cuffs. Who would have thought? Of course this would never have worked on the Kanosians, for them you needed to use a much denser iridium alloy.

Once my hands were free I looked around the room for any weapons and found a knife sitting on the desk. I take it and keep it in my right hand before looking around for any more implements that I could be using. Unfortunately there was only a small radio sitting on the counter which seemed to be in the process of being fixed so the signal was quite muddy. I lift it to my ear and tuned into our signal.

"There-too-many-AH!" shouted a Kanosian in his gruff voice. I frowned, the signal was rough and jagged but I got the idea. If this rescue party was really Kanosian then i had doubts that they would be on our side. I slowly came to the realization that this was...a marauding pack.

"Alright, time to reach the prison..." I muttered and opened the door of the room, peeking outside before dashing towards the battle. The prison was in the middle of the building and only one door led to it, the door that sat directly near the airspace where it seems that the battle was taking place. I get closer and closer to the battle before hearing it, the clashes of lasers and bullets whizzing through the air and the sounds of various Kanosians shouting.

"There's too many! GAH!" shouted one of them as he was shot with a plasma arrow on his chest and stumbled back, his tall and imposing physique collapsing onto the dirt before one of his comrades dragged him out of the way. It seemed like they were losing the battle and the fort that they had set up was right in front of the hallway that I needed to go through to reach my crew so...the chances of getting to the prison in time and freeing them were slim and even if we did...I suspected that we would have to be contending with whomever this new threat was.

"Where's that plasma bolt? I needed it into their left flanks two days ago!" shouted Maloq, his red armor was covered in dirt and his purple visor was shining as he lifted his axe and chucked it onto one of the approaching Kanosian soldiers. These didn't look like sanctioned forces.

"We already launched it sir!" shouted one of the men and Maloq shakes his head, I could tell that the tide of the battle was getting to him.

"Fine, if that's ho-" he began but I interjected.

"Maloq!" I called out and he turned, snarling and stumbling over to me, I was still hidden behind a wall so he couldn't exactly see me. He takes his axe and dashed over, the variety of plasma bolts from the enemy bounced off of his shield as he ducked behind the wall with me and held me up against the wall with his hands clenching my neck.

"I will snap you in two if you don't tell me what the fuck you are doing out here. If we die then these marauders will have their way with all of us and trust me, you want me being your jailor instead of them." he snarled and I held my hands up, dropping the knife onto the floor and shaking my head.

"You free my people, we help you fight them off and if we win, you let us go. Deal or no deal?" I stated and he sighed, shaking his head and glaring at me.

"....Fine. Fine! I'll send in the word!" he shouted as he gripped his radio before a loud explosion consumed the entire front of the building, blowing past his fort and at us as I was launched onto the floor with him on top, shielding me from all of the shrapnel.
