On the Yankee Station: Stories
William Boyd
Literature & Fiction
Wiliam Boyd, winner of the Whitbread and Somerset Maugham Awards, introduces unlikely heroes desperate to redeem their unsatisfying lives.
From California poolsides to the battlegrounds of Vietnam, here is a world populated by weary souls who turn to fantasy as their sole escape from life's inequities. Stranded in an African hotel during a coup, an oafish Englishman impresses a young stewardess with stories of an enchanted life completely at odds with his sordid existence in "The Coup." In the title story, an arrogant, sadistic American pilot in Vietnam underestimaets the power of revenge when he relentlessly persecutes a member of his maintenance crew. With droll humor and rare compassion, Boyd's enthralling stories remind us of his stature as one of contemporary fiction's finest storytellers.

Station Eleven
Emily St. John Mandel
Literature & Fiction
An audacious, darkly glittering novel set in the eerie days of civilization's collapse, Station Eleven tells the spellbinding story of a Hollywood star, his would-be savior, and a nomadic group of actors roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and humanity.
One snowy night Arthur Leander, a famous actor, has a heart attack onstage during a production of King Lear. Jeevan Chaudhary, a paparazzo-turned-EMT, is in the audience and leaps to his aid. A child actress named Kirsten Raymonde watches in horror as Jeevan performs CPR, pumping Arthur's chest as the curtain drops, but Arthur is dead. That same night, as Jeevan walks home from the theater, a terrible flu begins to spread. Hospitals are flooded and Jeevan and his brother barricade themselves inside an apartment, watching out the window as cars clog the highways, gunshots ring out, and life disintegrates around them.
Fifteen years later, Kirsten is an actress with the Traveling Symphony. Together, this small troupe moves between the settlements of an altered world, performing Shakespeare and music for scattered communities of survivors. Written on their caravan, and tattooed on Kirsten's arm is a line from Star Trek: "Because survival is insufficient." But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who digs graves for anyone who dares to leave.
Spanning decades, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, this suspenseful, elegiac novel is rife with beauty. As Arthur falls in and out of love, as Jeevan watches the newscasters say their final good-byes, and as Kirsten finds herself caught in the crosshairs of the prophet, we see the strange twists of fate that connect them all. A novel of art, memory, and ambition, Station Eleven tells a story about the relationships that sustain us, the ephemeral nature of fame, and the beauty of the world as we know it.

Never Buy a Raccoon at a Gas Station
Beth Detjens
One of my favorite pets growing up was a raccoon named Bandit. He wasn't by any stretch a traditional pet, but he was by far the most entertaining.
The lessons that accompany these stories aren't particularly deep. They're just a collection of simple truths that I learned from our life with Bandit that have served our family well. When you read the stories, you might shake your head and wonder how and why our family had so many crazy adventures. The short answer ... my eccentric, animal-loving dad, and my incredibly kind and gracious mom.
Growing up in our family was such a fun and educational adventure. Perhaps the most amazing part is that every story you'll read here actually happened—unbelievably, often unfortunately—it all happened.
May you enjoy reading these stories as much as my family enjoyed living them.
Review
Parents will enjoy this as much as their kids. (Especially parents who are kids of the 80's)January 20, 2019"I first read to my 10-year-old daughter who loved it. She couldn't wait to read with her 13-year-old sister. The next morning, they were both asking to read it to Dad. The whole family LOVED these colorful animal tales. And for an 80's kid like me, it felt like a walk down memory lane with all the descriptive 80's details (Polo, Caboodles, White Rain hairspray!) This is a great book for the entire family to enjoy together. It will have everyone smiling & eager for the next Bandit adventure!" ~ Steve

Thank you for taking the time to read these fun stories about my family's pet raccoon. If you enjoy hearing about our life with Bandit, keep an eye out for my next book, which will feature many of the other exciting animals I grew up with. Until then, never buy a raccoon at a gas station. :)
From the Inside Flap
Within just a few minutes of the car stopping at that gas tank, Mom had gone inside with my sister, Lora, gathered all the trash from our snacks, filled the dogs' water bowl, and had taken the dogs on a quick walk. Lora wasn't far behind. She practically ran back to the car, a white 1982 Malibu Classic, still holding her nose from the filthy gas station bathroom. I was always the slowest, so Dad had already finished pumping the gas and was headed inside to pay by the time I got my shoes on and sleepily stumbled toward the gas station bathroom, wondering what unsanitary wonders awaited me there. I was planning my strategy for scoring a Snickers and Pepsi when I noticed Dad was standing by the open window of a pickup truck talking to someone in the driver's seat.I was around 10 years old and always curious, especially if it looked like Dad was up to something interesting. Fun fact - he usually was. He was the only person I knew who loved animals even more than I did. And this conversation had all the indications of an animal adventure. As I got closer to where he was standing, I caught part of the conversation between my Dad and a man in the pickup truck. Dad was asking, "What would you take for it?" That's when I noticed a small moving something wrapped in a dirty blue towel on the seat beside him. I walked up to the passenger window to get a closer look.

Gehenna Station
Jr Hume
Screw up bad enough, Marine, and you might find yourself on a ship bound for Hell's doorstep. Inferno. Men call it a myth. They say there is no Punishment Platoon in a desert crawling with hungry raptors. But men disappear. Some come back. Most don't. Those that do won't talk of Inferno, or raptors, or a hellhole called Gehenna Station. Lieutenant Cord Falco has been booted out of Imperial Headquarters. His crime? The charges are somewhat murky. It's true that he found female companionship among a group of women the Duke considered to be his own, but that hardly constituted grounds for his assignment to the Punishment Platoon, Gehenna Station, Inferno. Pondering the reasons for his banishment take a back seat to survival the moment he lands beside the isolated blockhouse that is Gehenna Station. The ranking sergeant, an android named Radix, expresses little sympathy for the Lieutenant's plight. The Marines will have their hands full trying to survive in a desert crawling with raptors, carnivorous dinosaurs planted on Inferno, along with a few other long extinct life forms from Earth, and now one of the dominant life forms on the planet. As if raptors, the desert, isolation, and a dawning realization that a secret group operating within the Imperial military is responsible for the existence of Gehenna Station aren't enough to deal with, Falco and Radix are soon faced with a genuine alien invasion. Thus begins an arduous trek across hostile terrain with nothing but combat against overwhelming odds awaiting the Punishment Platoon. It ain't fair? Life ain't fair. You signed up to fight, didn't you, Marine? Get your weapon and mount up.From the AuthorThough Gehenna Station is a story of the far future, set against a backdrop of an empire which grew out of the Dark Times following the collapse of the Second Federation, it is primarily a saga of combat and survival, a tale of the Imperial Marines. From the Back CoverHell-Beasts Cord clawed at his handgun. A raptor lurched out of the dusty dark and knocked him flat. Blood splattered. The animal screamed in agony. One eye swung below a ruined socket. Gunny and Cord fired together into the lower part of the head, aiming for the brain. Cord switched to the chest, firing three more times before the raptor lurched back and slumped to one side. It made a single bubbling sigh and died. Using the creature's head as a prop, Cord hauled himself to his knees. Corporal Bolt stalked out of the dust and dragged the lieutenant upright. "You okay, L-T?" Cord stood trembling, stunned. Dust and the smell of blood hung in the air. "I -- I'm alive."

The Defense of Exeter Station
Part #1 of "Sandorn's Allegiance" series by Thom Bedford
At the turn of the twenty-ninth century, the Milky Way is on the verge of a galactic war. The Combined Systems Alliance continues to expand their territory—much to the displeasure of the Free Planetary Union who, until now, lacked the resources to halt the encroachment. In a bid to wrest control from the Alliance and retake their former colonies, Union agents throughout the Alliance Fleet organize a mass insurgency seizing countless assets. During the ensuing chaos, numerous ships are decimated and millions of lives are lost.
Retired Alliance Commander Tanic Sandorn finds himself stranded on a border station after the Union launches an all-out assault. Fighting against anxieties from the incident that pushed him into early retirement, Sandorn accepts being recalled to active duty and propelled to the front lines. This time, he will protect his crew and the inhabitants of the Exeter star system from any approaching threat—never again will he leave anyone behind.
But outnumbered, outgunned, and outflanked, Exeter Station is left running at a fraction of its operating capacity. Sandorn and the Alliance officers on board must strategize quickly and carefully to hold their ground, or they will be forced to surrender the station, the system, and their lives.
This space opera combines the epic fleet combat of Jack Campbell’s Lost Fleet series, the character development and subversion of Jasper T. Scott’s Dead Space series, and the world-building of David Weber’s Honor Harrington series.

Alien Night on Union Station
E. M. Foner
Science Fiction
Sequel to Date Night on Union Station - read that free book first! Five years after the events of Date Night on Union Station, Kelly has settled into married life and her job as the EarthCent ambassador. The only fly in the ointment is that most of the aliens on Union Station refuse to talk to her. But a mysterious new game is sweeping the galaxy, changing the balance of power between species and bringing game-savvy humans front-and-center. As the invitations to diplomatic functions pour in, Kelly finds herself struggling to understand exactly what's going on, not to mention finding babysitters on short notice. Fortunately, diplomats and alcohol go together like, well, diplomats and alcohol, and Joe has started micro-brewery business in Mac's Bones. The only thing left that could go wrong is a visit from her mother. From the AuthorI wrote Alien Night on Union Station in response to all of the readers of Date Night who wanted to read more about the Stryx-managed galaxy. It's been a pleasure for me to take an extended break from the science fiction epic I've been working on for years, where everything is life-and-death, cold calculation and hot blooded hatred. The EarthCent Ambassador series is my antidote to the grim "realities" of the epic science fiction world.

About Straight Outta Dodge City: “A dark, diverting anthology of 14 original tales, the third in a series. . . . By tossing weird fiction concepts into western settings, these tales give rise to unusual what-ifs. . . . [T]he ever-enjoyable Joe R. Lansdale is on hand with 'The Hoodoo Man and the Midnight Train,' an energetic tale of a mystical gunfighter, and Harry Turtledove presents the delightful 'Junior & Me,' set in an alternate world in which evolution favored reptiles rather than mammals, and the ornery galoot narrating the yarn is actually a highly evolved dinosaur. The result is an amusing . . . bunch of stories.”—Publishers Weekly
About Straight Outta Tombstone: “The authors were having fun. Even when they are not playing the stories for laughs, they are taking an opportunity to . . . tell a story with a fresh twist, and expand out of their expected boundaries.”—The Galveston County Daily News

The one and only Fannie Flagg, beloved author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven, and I Still Dream About You, is at her hilarious and superb best in this new comic mystery novel about two women who are forced to reimagine who they are.
Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother’s past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.
Sookie begins a search for answers that takes her to California, the Midwest, and back in time, to the 1940s, when an irrepressible woman named Fritzi takes on the job of running her family’s filling station. Soon truck drivers are changing their routes to fill up at the All-Girl Filling Station. Then, Fritzi sees an opportunity for an even more groundbreaking adventure. As Sookie learns about the adventures of the girls at the All-Girl Filling Station, she finds herself with new inspiration for her own life.
Fabulous, fun-filled, spanning decades and generations, and centered on a little-known aspect of America’s twentieth-century story, The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion is another irresistible novel by the remarkable Fannie Flagg.
