But Andy also explained that unless she stopped cutting herself and rubbing others with her blood, she’d never get out of Twin Towers and back to watching Clueless. And then Andy told her about the Principles. They changed her life.
After that day, Eden was on her best behavior. She didn’t cut herself once in prison. She said all the right things—the things Andy told her to say—in therapy. And once they let her out, she got a job as a cashier at a dollar store. Andy said she needed a job with a manager she reported to regularly, one who could tell the authorities that she was doing well and not causing trouble. She was what Andy called a “model citizen.”
It wasn’t perfect. She hadn’t spoken to her family in years, not since the night her stepdad had touched her in the bad way one time too many and she had to use the scissors on him a lot and then run away. And no, she didn’t have any friends, unless she counted Cher Horowitz, Dionne, and Tai. And of course she had Andy. There was always Andy.
She was just settling in with her ice cream, enjoying Cher quote Hamlet and embarrass Josh’s mean girlfriend, when her phone rang. She paused the movie and looked at the caller ID. She didn’t recognize the number but that didn’t matter. She’d been told she should always answer, just in case. So she did.
“This is Eden.”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” the woman on the other end of the line said. “I thought I was calling Three Man Pizza. I must have the wrong number. Are you sure this isn’t Three Man Pizza?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” Eden replied, offering the pre-arranged response she’d practiced so many times in the bathroom mirror. “This isn’t Three Man Pizza. But I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for.”
“Thank you. I hope so,” the other woman said, then hung up.
That was it. After all this time, she’d finally gotten the call. She’d been activated. Standing up, she walked quickly to the bathroom mirror. There was a bit of ice cream on her upper lip. She licked it up with her tongue. Then she stared at herself.
Eden knew she wasn’t pretty. Her stepdad had told her that many times, even though he seemed to like her looks enough to do those things to her. But she knew he was right. That was why people walked by her without ever looking at her. That’s why they sometimes didn’t hear her when she talked.
She was short and skinny, without curves. Her brown hair was limp. Her skin was pale but not in an elegant way. Her eyes were gray and dull. She just wasn’t memorable.
But that was about to change. Andy had promised her that once she got the call and accepted the mission, she would be remembered forever, as long as she stuck to the Principles. Andy was counting on her. Eden wouldn’t let her down.
