Morning sun cascaded through the building of the FBI HQ as Jake made his way to Chief Whittaker's office. The chief had called him in early, and he had no idea what it was about, but he hoped it was good news and not bad.
Jake had been with the FBI for years now, and he knew how important it was to maintain his composure in situations like this. He took a deep breath as he walked up to the chief's office and knocked.
"Come in!" the chief's gruff voice sounded.
Jake went in to see the chief sitting behind his desk, looking as sharp as ever. Jake had a lot of admiration for Harold Whittaker; he was an experienced, strong man with a keen eye, and a man of few words, at that.
"Good morning, Chief," Jake said.
"Have a seat, Agent Tucker."
Jake sat down, and the chief leaned forward in his chair, studying him closely.
"So, how are you feeling?" the chief asked.
Jake smiled; he had been expecting a good grilling from the chief, but instead he was being asked about how he was doing. It made Jake feel humbled and grateful at the same time.
"I'm doing well," Jake replied honestly. "The case was challenging, but it all worked out in the end."
The chief nodded in approval before leaning back in his chair and folding his hands together on top of his desk. "It's been quite a journey for you so far," Chief Whittaker said thoughtfully. "You've risen to every challenge without flinching, something that not many agents can say."
Jake smiled as the chief's words sunk in. He had worked hard to get where he was today, and it felt nice to be recognized for his efforts by someone as experienced and respected as Chief Whittaker.
"Thank you, sir," Jake said sincerely as he stood up from his seat. "I won't let you down."
The chief paused for a moment before continuing. "Plus, you really saved Ms. Fiona Red's life."
Jake's cheeks flushed slightly as he thought about Fiona, about how she'd hugged him after he'd saved her. It felt good to help someone like her. "Yes, but she helped herself too," Jake said. "It was all her work that had led us to William Harrell."
"She has a good eye, doesn't she?" Chief Whittaker said. "Did you like working with her?"
Jake was surprised by the chief's question, but he smiled and nodded. "Yes sir, she was a great asset in helping us solve this case.”
The chief gave him a knowing look before standing up from his desk. "Good to hear it," he said. "Would you like to work with her again?"
"What?" Jake asked, confused. Fiona was a general asset available in forensics, so he wasn't sure what he meant.
"Fiona Red impressed me," the chief said. "As you said, she was the real brain behind this case. I see something in her, something I think would be wasted if she sticks to only forensics. I'd like to see her around more, and I was thinking of pairing her up with you and Lauren. You can have her as an extra pair of eyes on your cases, and of course, your personal entomologist and forensic analyst. What do you think?"
Jake didn't know what to say. Of course, he had enjoyed working with Fiona, but he knew Lauren hadn't been thrilled. And with the ultimatum she'd given him... could he really say yes without talking to her?
"I'll only push for it if Ms. Red wants it too," the chief said. "It's just an experiment. What do you say, Jake?"
Jake was speechless. He had never expected the chief to offer him something like this. He knew it was a huge opportunity, and he wanted to say yes, but at the same time he felt conflicted. Would this make things worse between him and Lauren?
Jake wasn't sure. All he knew was that he had a lot of decisions to make.
