Instead of being tied up with rope in the middle of the forest, ready to fight for her life, she was in her cottage, picking out the best top to wear, and getting ready to dry her hair.
She was going on a date.
An actual date. With Owen.
He'd asked her again yesterday, in the car on the way back to the police department, as FBI swarmed the forest scene, and the killer was loaded into a police van, ready for transport to the maximum security cell where he would be held.
And May had realized that life was short, and that perhaps the person she wanted to be, the person she was realizing she could be, would not be scared to say yes, and to break out of her restrictive comfort zone, and to change things in a way that might make her happier.
After all, it was only one date. This was just the start of something better and more exciting, and May knew it would be a slow start.
But she was looking forward to tonight, a lot.
The day had been filled with messages of congratulations. Sheriff Jack had personally commended her and Owen at the press conference earlier. The FBI had thanked them for bravery shown and a job well done. Primrose’s parents had called her and cried on the phone for about half an hour.
May's mother and father had called her, too.
"May! I heard you fought this killer hand to hand," her mother had said in admiring tones. "You saved the community. I'm so proud of you, angel!"
"As am I," her father had echoed, and May had felt ten feet tall at their praise.
But catching the killer was all the reward she needed. She felt a deep sense of relief that this psychopath would no longer be terrorizing their community. At last, he would be locked away for the rest of his life.
She'd thanked Kerry, whose flyover had unwittingly saved May's life, allowing her to lash back at the killer and giving Owen time to reach her before Brian had suffocated May.
Kerry had given her a big, hard hug before she'd gotten into the car and headed off for their parents, where she would be spending a night with them, breaking the news about her engagement, and May was sure, getting all the love and support she needed at this time.
But May had declined the invitation to join that family gathering, because she was going on a date with Owen.
They were going for dinner, and then they were going dancing. And May was looking forward to it more than she'd believed possible. It felt exciting, as if a new and different life was glimpsed behind a door that was open now, just a crack.
But, as she picked up the hairdryer, May heard her phone ring. Quickly, she rushed over and grabbed it.
It was an unfamiliar number calling, and she answered feeling a flicker of trepidation.
"Deputy May Moore?" the voice said. "It's Pete here, from Pete's Locks. You brought a key in over the weekend. Two keys, actually."
"Yes." May stood straighter, feeling a spark of hope. "Yes, I did. Is there any news on them?"
"I think so. I've been trying to think back over the jobs I've done, and networking with my contacts."
"And is there a result?" May felt breathless with hope.
"Actually, as I was driving home this evening, one of my contacts called me back, and we were able to piece together where this safe is. There's a tiny reference number on the label of the one key, and we were able to make out two digits, which was enough for us to confirm this."
"Where the safe is? You mean, you know exactly where this particular safe is located?" May now felt dizzy at the prospect.
"I'm ninety percent sure, yes. Come into the shop tomorrow, and I'll explain to you, and show you where it's located."
"Thank you, Pete. Thank you so much. I'll be there." May cut the call, feeling a sense of total disbelief.
The safe - the exact safe that these keys opened - existed. It was real and it had a location. May strongly believed that this safe would hold something, some information, on her sister.
And tomorrow, she would learn where it was.
