Assumed Dead, page 29
“I’m not giving it to you to wear. If the day comes when you want me to put a ring on your finger, I’ll give you your own. But this one is yours to do what you want with. And so am I. I love you, Matt. ”
“I love you,” Matt got out, past the lump in his throat and a voice weak from shouting. “You don’t mind what I do with this?”
“No. It’s only a piece of metal. The contract it sealed is broken.”
A piece of gold metal. But gold meant nothing. To collect gold in this new world would be as useless to a human as it was to a magpie. Matt stood and walked to the parapet that gave the beautiful view of the rest of the town. A few columns of smoke marred the landscape, and the nearby helicopter wreckage was surely bringing down property values.
Matt wound up and threw the ring. It flew out into the air, glinting in the sun. Hung for that split second at the top of its arc, then fell. He saw it clip the edge of the roof of a house and spin off to vanish among thick trees. He turned back around to see Peter staring at him.
“What?” Matt said with a grin. “You think I should have waited until I found a volcano to throw it into?”
About the Author
I live in the UK and my writing is primarily fuelled by tea and rainy days. After spending far too many years only thinking about writing I finally started putting words down back in 2003. I’m a long time science fiction fan and a lover of all types of stories, but especially those about people who find themselves in the trickiest of no-win situations. I like nothing more than chasing my characters up trees and throwing rocks at them until they figure a way down.
