  Albigensians A widely used name for the Cathars based on their substantial presence in the town of Albi, in the Languedoc.

  Albigensian Crusade Military campaign fought against the Languedocians from 1209 to 1229 by order of Pope Innocent III to eradicate the Cathars.

  apparellamentum A monthly group confession given by the Perfects to a Cathar deacon or bishop.

  Believers Lay people who supported the Cathar Perfects. Believers were not subject to the same purity restrictions as the Perfects. Their only duty was to perform the melioramentum.

  Bogomilism Dualist Christian heresy originating in the Balkans, supposedly founded by Bogomil, in the 10th century.

  consolamentum The Cathar rite of initiation that turned the Believer into a Perfect.

  covenensa A promise by a Believer to take the consolamentum at some future date.

  docetism The belief that Christ manifested on Earth without a physical body.

  dualism A category of religious belief that posits the existence of two opposing cosmic forces, usually of light and darkness or good and evil.

  endura A Cathar rite that bound the recipient to fast and to drink nothing but cold water once the consolamentum was received.

  Good Men and Women or Good Christians The Cathars own preferred name for themselves.

  Historia Albigensis The History of the Albigensian Crusade, written by Peter of Vaux-de-Cernay, a Cistercian monk.

  Inquisition The body formally constituted by the papacy in the 13th century to mount the official persecution of heresy by means of special ecclesiastical courts.

  Manichaeism Dualist religion founded by the prophet Mani in the 3rd century.

  melioramentum A greeting given by Cathar Believers to Cathar Perfects.

  Patarines The name of a Cathar group in Italy.

  Perfect A category of Cathar or Bogomil who was fully committed to their churches and had received the consolamentum. They wore black robes.

  Publicans 12th-century heretics who went to England in the reign of Henry II.

  The Song of the Cathar Wars A long poem by William of Tudela that commemorates the Albigensian Crusade.

  theotokos Meaning ‘God-bearer’, theotokos was one of three classes of the faithful among the Bogomil, and it was the equivalent of a Perfect.

  Waldensians Reformist Christian movement founded in around 1173 by Peter Valdès (Waldo) in Lyon, France. It was eventually declared heretical.
