“Yeah, you have like a barn and room for horses, right?” Jack asked.
“We do,” Ezra answered uncertainly. “We’ve done some work on the barn, but we haven’t thought about adding animals yet.
“Since you finished the big house project, maybe you want to try a new one,” Jack suggested. “What do you think about really expensive, likely abused and traumatized mountain horses?”
Later on, when the party had died down, and I was finally able to wrangle baby Grant away from Mae, I ventured into Ezra’s library where it was quieter. I stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, cradling the sleeping baby in my arms, and I watched the snow fall.
Just beyond the glass, I spied a few flowers pushing up through the snow. It wasn’t the right season for them, especially not with the snow actually falling, but blue flowers and a few bright yellow daisies poked through.
Every year since Peter had died, I had seen the same flowers on Christmas. Somehow, I knew they were from him, Elise, and Daisy.
“Merry Christmas,” I whispered into the night, and I hoped that they were happy in the afterlife.
A moment later, I heard footsteps behind me, and I glanced back to see Jack walking over to me. “Are you hiding out? Do you want to be alone?”
“No. I’m just enjoying the night and quiet, but I’m happy to have you join me.”
He appeared at my side, slipping his arm around my waist, and he kissed my shoulder. “It’s been a good year, hasn’t it? So, what do you think? Should we do a thousand more?”
“A thousand more trips around the sun with you?” I pretended to think about it. “Sounds perfect.”
