  It was two in the afternoon and a queue was already forming of those wishing to see the matinee. There was no shortage of takers for that afternoon show, and by four o’clock the tickets for the evening performance were also fully booked.

  A board was put up in the foyer to inform the public.

  It said simply:

  All Sold Out.

  Alex Shearer lives with his family in Somerset. He has written more than a dozen books for both adults and children, as well as many successful television series, films, and stage and radio plays. The BBC series of his book Bootleg won a BAFTA award for Best Children’s Drama, The Speed of the Dark and The Hunted have both been shortlisted for the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award and Sea Legs won the Stockport Schools’ Book Award.
