She had disappeared before, and she could do so again. There would be an unlocked condo, the occupants out skiing for the day, their car keys left carelessly on a table.

She would leave it unharmed, for the police to recover and return to them.

Unharmed, but a long way away. Perhaps on the way to Chicago. Cities were easy to vanish into, easy to get illegal work, easy to get a new identity.

And then what? And then why? Why bother? She had achieved what she had wanted, and now the world was empty for her. There was nothing left. Nothing worth living for.

Except there was. There was a way forward. There was always a way forward. And it started – as everything started – with the first step.

She opened the condo door and walked outside, her boots leaving footprints in the fresh snow.

  Acknowledgements

I am always struck by how many people are involved in getting a book from an idea to a draft to a final, published novel. There are many, and I am both grateful to them and in awe of what they do, from copy edit to cover design to marketing. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

In particular, thanks to Becky Ritchie, super-agent, for her unerringly brilliant advice on all things writing.

Finally – Kathryn Cheshire and Angel Belsey: it is a wonderful feeling to know that you are in the hands of editors who believe in your work, and whose judgement you can trust. Thank you both.
