DESCRIPTION
It was tortuous to work for my dad’s best friend.
When I say torturous, I mean that I had to tear my eyes away from his chiseled abs and gorgeous jawline.
Until I just couldn’t…
Dane is a former SEAL turned CEO.
Oh, how I wish CEOs weren’t that irresistible.
As a self-made woman who never used her daddy’s resources, I have a ton of pride.
I would never risk my career by sleeping with my boss.
I would never destroy my reputation by falling into bed with my dad’s best friend.
Or so I thought.
Yes, I did those exact things but that’s not even the worst part.
I’ve got a bigger problem to deal with.
Not one but two problems.
I’m having his twins… And I’m effectively panicking.
Am I about to lose my heart, my career, and my sanity all at once?
PROLOGUE
Bridget (Jet)
I’ve experienced shocking events in my life before. Like when I was eleven and my mother moved me from New York to California, dropping me off with the father I’d never met at his construction site. Lucky for me, he was a great dad, and his wife was more maternal than my mother.
But I wasn’t prepared for the shock of walking into my father’s house and discovering my boss, the man I was having sex with and falling for, was my dad’s best friend. In fact, it was a little creepy to think I was sleeping with a man old enough to be my father. I’d never thought of the nineteen-year age difference between me and Dane before. But seeing him talk about the old days with my dad was weird.
Beyond the awkwardness was the realization that as much as I tried to keep my father out of my business, including getting me a job, he had in fact done that. I’d used my last name from before my dad gave me his just to be sure no potential boss asked if I was related to Troy Manion.
This was why I should have stayed in Northern California instead of coming home after college. But I’d missed my sisters and brother, and maybe my dad and his wife Lizzy, too.
I plastered on a smile after the shock of seeing Dane and did my best to celebrate Lizzy’s birthday with no problems. The same old friends were here; Ryker and Nina Williams with their kids, Zach and Elena Clarke and their kids, Giorgio and Marilyn Spanos with their kids, and Claude and Felicia Monroe and their kids. Along with my dad and Lizzy’s four kids, it looked like a child’s day camp around the pool.
There were two new members of my parents’ friend group; the aforementioned Dane MacLeod, dad’s buddy from when they were kids, and Theo Newberry, the pro-football player who last season was injured. He wasn’t married, but he wasn’t single either, as he had a girlfriend who hadn’t been able to attend for reasons I didn’t know.
I busied myself helping corral the kids or serve food, but all the time I seethed that my father went behind my back to get me a job with his long-time friend. I wondered what he’d think about the fact that I’d fucked his friend…many times in many places, in many positions?
What did it say about Dane that he fucked me many times in many places, in many positions?
I shook my head. Dane looked shell-shocked too. Maybe he didn’t know.
Ugh.
I gathered plates to bring back to the kitchen, annoyed thoughts whirling around in my head. I hated that my father butted in. I was a grown-ass woman now. If Dane didn’t know, that at least told me that I earned the job on my merit, not on my father’s name.
Indignation replaced annoyance. I was a woman. A woman with a career. If I want to fuck Dane, I should be able to. We were consenting adults.
I made my way over to Dane, who was talking with Theo. Dane’s gaze tracked me and it was all I could do not to smirk because I knew that look. My body tingled from the memory of that look. He spun away.
When I reached them, I smiled sweetly. “Can you lend me a hand, Dane?”
He glanced over at my father. “What do you need?”
“Come inside and help me with these.”
He glanced around and probably noticed that everyone was outside. He’d be alone with me inside, so he surprised me when he said, “Sure.”
He took some plates from me and followed me back into the house.
I put my stack in the sink and gripped the edge of the counter with my fingers.
“Why didn’t you tell me—” We spoke at the same time.
I looked up at him. “Tell you what?”
He leaned close and spoke low. “That you’re Troy’s kid.”
Anger flared. “I’m not a kid. I think you know that.”
He winced. “Jesus, fuck…” He turned away, running his fingers through his hair.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were his friend?” I asked.
The sliding door opened. I turned to do the dishes as my dad walked in. He grinned when he saw us. “My kid is great, isn’t she? I’m glad you’re able to get to know her.”
I held back a retort about Dane knowing me…in the biblical sense.
Dane cleared his throat. “Yes.”
I closed my eyes, praying for strength.
My dad kissed me on the cheek. “I’m so glad you moved back home, baby girl.”
I clenched my teeth, wanting to remind him I wasn’t a baby or a girl.
He picked up a platter of meat. “I was disappointed when she decided to transfer from UCLA up to UC Berkeley, but now she’s back.”
“You and your friends were just upset that you didn’t have me around to babysit your broods.” I scrubbed a plate, taking my frustration out on the food particles.
“You know that’s not true. I’m so proud of you. I’ve got to get these grilled up.” He left Dane and me alone.
“He’s why you hired me, right?” I said when my father was out of earshot.
He seemed genuinely shocked, but what were the odds that I’d get a job with my dad’s friend without my dad’s intervention?
“You’re joking, right?” he said incredulously. “If I’d known you were Troy’s kid—daughter, I’d have never—”
I whirled on him. “Hired me? Fucked me?”
His head swiveled around like he was waiting for my father to kick his ass, which he surely would, although as an ex-SEAL, Dane wouldn’t suffer much.
“Both.”
I jerked back. “If you’d known, you wouldn’t have hired me?”
He let out a nervous laugh. “That’s the thing you pick up on? Not the fucking part?”
“Yeah. Why wouldn’t you have hired me?”
He leaned in close. “Because I wanted to fuck you and you don’t fuck your friend’s daughter.”
Heat rushed through my body. It was betraying me. I was mad, upset, but my body wanted his touch.
I pushed away and headed up to my room, wanting more now than ever to find my own place. I was about to shut the door when a powerful hand stopped it.
“Bridget.” Dane didn’t push his way in, but neither did he let me shut the door.
“What?” I left the door and went to sit on my bed.
He stepped in, looking around my room. My anger turned to mortification. My room looked the same as it had when I left for college; pink walls decorated with fairy lights and pictures of rock stars. So much for being an adult.
“I swear. I didn’t know about your relation to Troy. He always called you Jet. And you have a different last name. How could I know?”
He had a point. And despite the attraction, he didn’t seem like the type of guy who’d betray his best buddy since they were kids.
He squatted down in front of me. “I’m sorry.”
“For what? For fucking me?”
He looked down for a moment, which I took as his answer. He lifted his head. “No. God help me; I should be sorry for that.”
My body tingled again.
“I’m sorry that I put you in this situation.”
Thankfully, anger flared over the tingles. “You didn’t. Not any more than I did. I hate it that my dad thinks I’m still a kid. I don’t need it from you too. I make my own decisions, get into my own predicaments.”
He nodded. “I wasn’t implying that you’re a child. I know you’re not. You’re smart and creative and…”
“And what?”
“And something that’s no longer appropriate for me to say.” He stood up, and it occurred to me that from now on things would be different between me and Dane, but I didn’t want that. My father didn’t have to change anything as long as he didn’t know.
“You’re strong and brave and loyal and…” I hesitated, not sure if I was being too impulsive.
He arched a brow. “And what?”
“Sexy.” I reached out and cupped him through his jeans.
“Bridget.” I heard the wariness, but he didn’t step back or push my hand away.
Emboldened, I undid the button of his jeans, sliding the zipper down, and freeing his dick.
“Bridget…we can’t.”
I sucked the tip of his dick into my mouth.
“Ah fuck.”
I glanced up to see him drop his head back. His fingers laced through my hair.
“I’m going to hell.”
If that was the case, I was going to make sure he had an orgasm that would make going to hell worth it.
CHAPTER ONE
Dane MacLeod—Two Months Earlier
The military was good to me, but I was ready to retire. What I wasn’t ready for was coming back home and diving headfirst into the family business—the business I never wanted to be a part of. Navy SEAL training was challenging. Being with my family was excruciating.
To help in the transition to a new life, I reached out to my childhood friend, Troy Manion. I wondered if he’d even remember me. Our contact was sporadic over the last twenty years, when I left right after high school to join the Navy. He hadn’t forgotten. In fact, he was very enthusiastic about my return and invited me to dinner.
I should have known when he gave me the address that Troy had done very well for himself. I knew the area had nice homes nestled together in a family-friendly neighborhood. His home was outside the neighborhood, where the housing plots were larger to fit larger homes. Many were fenced in, not unlike my parents’ place.
“Dane. God, it’s good to see you.” Troy pulled me in for a hug, patting my back.
“You too, Troy. Wow. Quite the place you’ve got. Has Tiana seen it?” I mentioned his high school sweetheart, who’d broken up with him when his aspiration was to be a construction worker. She wanted glitz, glamour, and, most of all, money.
He laughed. “Yes, actually.”
“You’re still in touch?” That surprised me. High school was so long ago.
“Long story. Come meet the real love of my life.” He escorted me up the hall, making a detour into a large kitchen. “Beer first. Unless you want something else?”
“Beer would be perfect.”
Troy opened the refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of imported beer. “Remember the first time we got drunk?”
I shook my head. “I think my brain was pickled.” I did remember the time, but the biggest part of the memory was how I felt like shit the next day. Worse than shit, actually.
Troy laughed. “God, I puked and puked and puked.” He clicked his beer bottle against mine. “Here’s to our misspent youth.”
He left the kitchen with me following him through a spacious living room that had large floor to ceiling windows. Several children splashed in a pool.
“This is all quite domestic,” I said, surprised at the pang of envy.
“Who’d have thought I’d end up like this, eh?” He opened the door and I followed him out. “Lizzy, baby, come meet my oldest friend.”
A lovely woman rose from the side of the pool where she'd been sitting next to a toddler. “Ari, can you come watch Eli?”
“Can’t he just get out with you?” a young girl whined.
“I don’t want to get out,” the toddler, Eli, said.
“How about you all get out?” Lizzy’s tone was flat, but her eyes zeroed in on the kids in a way that suggested she meant business.
“Fine. Come on, Eli.” The older girl swam to the steps where the boy sat with a toy boat.
Lizzy turned to me and smiled. I could see why Troy fell for her. She wasn’t just beautiful, she radiated with kindness.
“It’s so nice to meet you, finally.”
I held out my hand, but she embraced me. “Please tell me some of the stories he tells about your adventures aren’t true.”
I laughed. “Sorry. I suspect they are true.”
She rolled her eyes. “How did you ever survive childhood?”
Troy and I got into mischief as kids, but the challenge of my childhood wasn’t the crap he and I got in. It was from my family.
“The oldest over there is Ariana.” Troy pointed to the girl who was sitting with Eli. “Eli is our youngest, and unless I can change Lizzy’s mind, our youngest.”
