“What the fuck are you doing at Humbard’s desk?”
Paige looked up at her immediately.
“What the hell, Paige?”
“Shut the door.”
Grace stepped inside and closed the door behind her, but she refused to sit down. Crossing her arms over her chest, she tensed every muscle in her body as she waited with bated breath for an answer.
“I got an unexpected promotion today.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’m the temporary commander of the unit.”
“You’re fucking with me.”
“I’m not.” Paige stood up and leaned over the desk, both her palms flat on the wood. “Humbard was relieved of duty this afternoon.”
“What?” Grace pulled the chair out and sat down heavily in it, all the air in her lungs leaving her chest. “What happened?”
“I have no idea, honestly. Esparza came in here, took him out, and then put me in charge. I’m just trying to figure out what the hell Humbard’s been doing so I can keep this place running for now until they find a proper replacement.
Grace looked up at Paige with wide eyes. “You don’t want the job?”
Paige shrugged. “I never wanted command. I like going out into the field, and I can’t do that as much when I’m in command.”
“True.” The conversation Alonzo just had with her flashed through her mind, and she shook her head. “So…I guess I should update you on my case, then.”
“I guess you should. Get to it, Halling.”
Still in shock, Grace relayed the information from her case she’d closed with Blake that afternoon. If Paige was going to be her new boss, it was going to be a long work day every day. Perhaps she should reconsider Alonzo’s offer. Biting her tongue, she shook the thought from her head. That was stupid. She had Paige had worked together for a year, they could certainly manage this shift, especially if it was just temporary.
“Grace?”
“Right. So we arrested Diego.”
“Figures.”
Grace smirked. Everything would be fine. It had to be.
