Faerie Storm, page 18
part #8 of Harbinger P.I. Series
“When I finally found my way out of the woods,” Lydia said.
“Sure,” I said, seeing the sense in what Leon was saying. Mrs Cornell might be suspicious of Lydia’s story and that suspicion might be increased if it was a P.I. who brought her daughter home.
“Thanks for saving me,” Lydia said as she and Leon got into the Durango. I stood on the dirt road and watched them go until the vehicle was out of sight.
When I turned to face the cabin, I was surprised to see Merlin standing on the porch. He stepped toward me. He held Excalibur in his hand. The sword wasn’t covered anymore. Its blade glinted in the cold sunlight.
“Alec,” he said, “you really have to stop leaving your sword behind. I told you before; she doesn’t like to be abandoned.
“And I told you I was done. This is over.” I pointed at Excalibur. “It’s time for you to leave and give Sheriff Cantrell his body back.”
He frowned at me. “You don’t mean that, Alec. Look how well you and the sword worked together in that castle. Didn’t it feel wonderful being able to vanquish your enemies like that? Just think what you could do together if you continued to work together. You protect people. It’s what you do. Imagine how many people you could protect with such a powerful weapon by your side.”
He held the sword out to me. “Take it. It’s yours.”
I took the sword. As soon as my hand closed around its grip, I felt energy surge along my arm. Before it could get any further than that, I whirled around to face the lake and hurled the sword as far as I could.
Excalibur spun in an arc, the blade flashing in the sun. As it descended toward the water, I felt relieved that I was never going to see the damned thing again.
Just as the sword was about to hit the water, a female hand and arm, clad in delicate chain mail, thrust through the surface and caught Excalibur’s handle. For a moment, the sword and the hand were poised above the water, the sword’s blade pointing straight up at the sky.
Then the hand descended, taking the sword with it into the depths.
I spun around to face Merlin. “The Lady of the Lake has taken the sword back. This is over. Now get the hell out of here and bring back the sheriff.”
He offered me a thin-lipped smile. “I don’t think I’ll be leaving just yet, Alec.”
I summoned up a rage that I knew would bring magic with it. I was willing to tap the deepest parts of the Melandra Configuration to blast Merlin back to wherever the hell he came from.
He stepped back and lifted his arms.
The next thing I knew, I was being hurled backward through the air. I hit the dirt with a force of impact that made the air in my lungs explode out of my mouth with a grunt of pain. I slid into the bushes by the side of the lake.
By the time I untangled myself from them and regained my feet, Merlin was gone.
He had Sheriff Cantrell’s body and he wasn’t willing to give it back. Meanwhile, the sheriff was trapped in some sort of ice prison on another realm.
Felicity’s toast on the academy roof had been premature. Not everything had ended as it should.
Some things were still very wrong.
NIGHT HUNT
The series continues in Night Hunt…
The night is dark...and full of paranormal killers
If Jason, Michael, and Freddy were merged into one being and given supernatural powers, the result would be something like Mister Scary. He's been carrying out his murders from the Shadow Land for way too long now. It's time to put him down.
